Hello folks,

Im considering sending of for my DSB certification, Im qualified 2 years now which is apparently the minimum to be considered the thing is I have only worked for around 12 months in the last 2 years due to unemployment, does anyone have any advise on what would be best done in this situation? I was working with an Irish fella in australia last year that had just come from Norway and he reckons that there will be alot of work for sparks out there in 2012.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks Stevie.

What are the pros & cons regarding working in the Norwegian oil & gas industry as opposed to the UK?

I am thinking of booking CompEX, BOSIET & MIST but realistically I'll need onshore experience before getting offshore. Surely the onshore experience would be better done in the sector I'd prefer work in offshore?

Not sure about the pros of Norway but one of the cons is the tax if you are PAYE. There aren't to many mobs taking on Ltd anymore.

You should look at trying to get on to the power station shut down that is happening in Dublin soon although you would maybe need compex for that.

It is a gamble you take by splashing out a few grand and getting these tickets, but i do know a good few people who it has paid off for.

Hi tomboy,

do you have any contacts or additional info on this power station shut down.

Much appreciated

Kev

Thanks timbo,

My gut feeling is that the pay, conditions & time off in the Norwegian sector is better than the UK but it is even more difficult to get offshore and is getting worse if you don't speak a Scandinavian language. Reading some of the posts on here, it seems I might be best off moving to Aberdeen and getting onshore experience there while I build up contacts. Any idea how long I'd have to spend onshore before getting off? My wife is giving me a maximum of 12 months or else it's back to Dublin! Seriously.

Like Kev, I'd be interested in the shut down in Dublin. Hadn't even heard of one to be honest!

I'm finishing a degree (which is unlikely to get me a job any time soon!) at the moment so I won't be able to do any courses or work until May but I'm going to use the little spare time I have to make a few contacts, decide on moving, accommodation, courses etc., so I hit the ground running in May.

If Aberdeen is the most likely destination for me, I might as well book the courses there to get a feel of the place. EPIT seem reasonable for CompEX, as do Survivex for BOSIET & MIST. Is it worth doing the Euro BOSIET? Apparently it covers temporary contracts in the Norwegian sector. I figure that any contract I'm offered in that sector will most likely be temporary anyway so I might see if my funds can stretch to that. Can always do OLF in Norway if I got a permanent position.

Anyway, as I said I won't be ready to rock until late May so I'd be happy to post any jobs up here that I come across in the meantime.

Best of luck lads.

My plan is to head to Aberdeen also around April/May as the contract I am on is up then.
I did my compex in Forth Valley college in Falkirk as I found hotels to be slightly cheaper there.
I'm heading to Aberdeen in March while on R&R to survivex to do BOSIET and you will need the Mutually recognized course if you are seeking work in Norway etc.
Personally, I would get your compex first and try and get some Ex experience onshore.

Wondering if anyone could tell me working hours for norway (onshore) rates of pay and tax. I heard 12 on 16 off( 20 an hour) with one company, and another company 4 weeks on 2 weeks off but couldnt find out hours worked or rate of pay.

As far as I no the accomadation is supplied and a u get some money towards flights..I'm a Irish sparks looking to head out there myself..
There is a Irish company by the name of icds they have a office in London they pay for flights accomadation and u get 3 square meals a day all in on the package
the rotation is 4 weeks on and 2 off....ar u working at the moment??

I think getting the food & accommodation would be very important. Anything towards flights would be a bonus.
From what I've heard the Norwegian companies are great to work for but they are increasingly looking for guys who can speak their language.
My long term plan is to work offshore but I'm going to need to get some oil & gas industry experience onshore for a year first. To do that I'm looking into a move to Aberdeen or Norway. Norway would offer better conditions (like the time off) but Aberdeen might give me a better chance of getting offshore. I'll probably take the first decent offer I get and see how it goes.
I'm not working at the moment as I'm finishing a college degree (that is unlikely to result in employment!) full time. I'll be done at the end of May and I'm going to do a CompEx course and CCNSG Safety Passport (UK) then. Hopefully that'll be enough to get me a start.
