House bashing is childs play and can be taught to most people in a matter of weeks no problem!!! But it is the basis of an electricians experiance wiring a circuit is wiring a circuit where its done makes no difference!!! Understanding how it works and the effects the smallest things can make and knowing how to fault find is another thing!!! I have been an electrician for 14 years and every day is a school day as they say lol You have many days of scratching your head to come and enjoy it !!! I love it when something tests my skills. I think you have thrown yourself in at the deep end and would have been better to start with houses and work yourself up to the rest. My biggest advise would be listen and ask a lot of questions !! I have worked with what I call kellogs sparks with some good!! some bad !! The one thing I would say is no matter how long you have been qualified some a only good to wire houses some have the skills to do as they please ! I know lots of sparks that have 2391 and have no idea how to apply the regs they just know what the regs say. I don't have 2391 but it is something that I am being forced in a roundabout way to take because of the requirement being a must now days !! I wish you the best of luck but remember the regs are all about intepretation!!! Thanks Kelvin

Ever heard of tact?

This chap has recognised his limitations and wants constructive advise for him to progress in his career.
I blame 2 people for his position. His training provider for misinformation and his employer not necessarily recognising his current skillset.

This is an open forum but I feel that kicking a man when he's down isn't necessary.

HI widdler
I have noticed i a few threads that you seem to teach electrics may i ask what and were mate

Heya, I teach level 3 2330 at East Berkshire College and my old man runs a training centre where I teach: 2391-10, 2391-20, 2382, 2392, 2377 & 2393. The training centre is based in ascot but we have set it up with mobile capabilities to deliver courses at the workplace.

On the days I'm not lecturing I do consultation work for companies, giving them guidance and assistance whether it's for preparation for an inspection or toolbox talks kinda stuff.

When I'm not doing that I'm either messing around with the IET or I'm on here somewhere.

cheers for the reply Widdler

I have been trying to get on 2330 lv3 and then the nvq

I didnt complete my apprenticeship 24yrs ago but have been involved with electrical installation mainly domestic for the 24 yrs on and off It was a JIB apprenticeship also under the CITB this was in 1986
last few years i have been a carer for the mrs since she was left disabled after a operation

I had tried many times to get on a apprentice type course over the years but was always told to old or no funding or help with getting on a training course

so last year i did a 6 week course after contacting jobcentre many times to be told there was o help and because i am a carer I am exempt from work so basically there is no help from them whatsoever as i am not classed as unemployed and exempt from seeking work. So after looking at every private training provider i could i chose to do it with reactfast for a large amount of money IE ÂŁ4020 reduced from ÂŁ5020 for basically domestic installer course even though they say train to be a electrician
I got training on how to design, install and inspect and test and certificate mainly domestic installations C&G 2382-10, 2377-200, 2393-100, and logic full scope electrical level A and defined scopes B,C certification and competence achievmet card based on a number of practical and theory based exams
I also got a megger 1552, BS7671, OSG, course notes and a CK toolkit
I knew the practical side of the job as i used to do new build, rewires, some commercial and working with sparkys a few times in a industrial environment
but i wouldnt say i was competent to work on anything but domestic and small commercial as this is the main area of experience i have

MY aim is to set up self employed as soon as possible carrying out mainly domestic and small commercial and give up my carers role

I also have done a course for 2391-10 this year as i had been told this was the exam to do as most employers hold it in high regard i did it at bury college which i passed first time even though i am not currently working in the industry

My tutor at college told me that all i need now is to register for the NVQ 2356 to eventually get electrician status from the JIb
I tried to get on the NVQ with them but they are not taking more candidates on plus i also believe you have to be in the industry to register
I have contacted Delta training as they do one online but as i havent got the 2330 or sufficient under pinning knowledge would have to do a knowledge assessment i believe and as its a private provider the fee will be 900+

I also tried to get on the 2330 lv3 at warrington college but after initially being told there may be a place available was later told that the course was full
Recently i found out the 2330 and the 2356 are ending and being replaced by 2357 a combination of both and to be eligible for this you have to be working in the industry

Widdler if i dont get registered for the nvq in time would i as a self employed 40 yr old be able to get on the 2357 or is it just going to be for 16 yr olds

The reason i am asking is i cant find anywhere to do the 2330 without paying something like 8000 to someone like Able skills in dartford kent which is not really a option with distance and extra cost of stopping down there all week for the duration of the course and then the expense of travelling home each weekend

Widdler do you know if there is anywhere i can get on the 2330 complete or just lv3 without paying the earth
or do you think it will be possible for adult to do the new 2357 if i am self employed
cheers for any help and advice you can give
i have contacted C&G but they just say to search for a local centre and ask them

not much help really and considering i have spent almost ÂŁ5000 on there quals and training and related books to be told most of the quals i have are basic and i will struggle to get employment as i havent done a apprenticeship or 2330 and the nvq

any advice you can give i would be grateful cheers mate
sorry for the long post

Hi Brucelee,

I have also just finished the 7 week course at ReactFast in Birmingham and have left with the same qualifications you speak of. I was led to believe that this was really all i needed to get going in regards to working on Domestic and small commercial sites. What does 2330 and 2357 entitle you to do as an electrician then? I'm so new to this whole thing, it seems the more i speak to people and read things the more C&G quals keep springing up and the more additions i need to add to my belt before i can do anything? it seems like a never ending struggle to get qualified to a level whereby you are taken seriously for anything?

I think to be taken seriously you would need to just gain experience. You cant walk out of an intensive course and then perform at a respectable level, its just not possible. Most of us here did the old apprentice route. It took us three to four years of experience gaining without being considered as an electrician along the whole way. Once we got our credentials we were then ready to start taking on the electricians responsibilities. It was then that our experience allowed us to progress and spread our wings so to speak.
The training centres doing these intensive courses are just supplying exams and basic syllabus to allow students to gain the minimum recognised qualifications. Unfortunately for you guys you cannot be taught experience and so need to seek it.
I myself select not to teach these courses as I feel they are spiking a huge hole in the industry so I stick with 3 year stretch or level 3 and 4 courses.
I appreciate you guys being told you come out as an electrician, but you just need to be patient both with yourselves to gain experience, and with us old fashioned guys getting used to it.

Hi wade

you have the necessarry basic qualifications as widdler says to join a part p competent person scheme to carry out domestic work
to work on industrial or commercial there is no requirment at present to join any scheme but it still needs to be designed, constructed , inspected & testing in accordance with the requirments of BS7671

But its highly unlikely that you will get work self employed doing large industrial or commercial premises without a apprentice type qualification such as C&G 2330 Lv1,Lv2,Lv3 and then a NVQ 2356

the 2330 is a electrotechnical certificate that would give you the underpinning knowledge to work in any electrical envioronment, but experience also is vital the nvq is based on and set on the type of work you undertake and you have to complete yourself mostly on line using work based evidence at a cost of between ÂŁ450 and ÂŁ900+ with a private provider as because you havent done 2330 or similar you will have to do a knowledge assesment to see if you have the required underpinning knowledge. the NVQ will enable you to register with JIB for electrician status
you dont need these to work in a domestic environment

You have enough to join Elecsa or niceic But as he says experience is probably 90% of the job so if you have no experience in doing domestic or commercial then try to get on with a local Electrical Contractors who you will be able to gain valuable experience, knowledge hints and tips etc

i have been involved 24 yrs on and off i had a apprenticeship as a jib apprentice electrician which i gave up after 1 year as i was stupid 16 year old who felt i wasnt learning enough practically and the way the course was taught at college not understanding enough of the theory so i gave it up stupidly, then after a few other jobs wet back to installation work doing new build for a local contractors from 1988-1992 or so when the last recession hit we were doing upto 5 houses a day from two bedroom to 5 bedroom then when the recession hit we had 1 or 2 a week so i couldnt survive on the daily rate which i was on at the time which was ÂŁ26

I tried many times to get a apprentice type course but to no avail
done rewires with others and on my own in the past and worked with other sparkys on some commercial and a little industrial but not much and not enough to say i am competent to work unsupervised in this kind of environment

I then did maintainance work for a commercial premises doing the electrics, plumbing, basically everything and anything which again was a low paying job

after my partner was left disabled after a private op i had to become her carer 5 yrs ago

since then i had tried to get on course for electrical installation again may times with colleges or through jobcentre but always told no

so after 3 years of this and looking at the options the oly one left for me was a private training provider i looked at all of them
i chose reactfast because of what they were offering which as the rest is not much really
I wanted to do it with able skills in dartford ket as they were offering the 2330 and NVQ but because of location and having to also care for my mrs not really a viable option
I have always been able to carry out the practical side of the job apart from all the testing
so i did this course to get qualifications and to try and learn the theory side of things as well as understand inspecting and testing ad how to carry it out competently

the course we did is enough to jin elecsa or similar and set up self employed as a domestic installer and maybe carry out some small commercial but i wouldnt recommend trying to carry out anything bigger on your own

try to get on with someone as a electricians mate/ labourer to gain more valuable experience as this is when you will really learn all you need to know its one thing in a booth in college or otherwise but to do it in someones house or business is another

at the end of the day its how competent you feel you are and knowig your limitations dont try to do anyhting your not comfortable with as it would be stupid and dangerous

the courses we did were ok as far as they went but its not possible to know everything in such a short space of time to work as a electrician in any setting

I have alsoi just done 2391-10 and passed first time but i studied every day for over 4 month upto 12 hrs a day and erolled for a 8 week evening course 3 hrs a week
If i hadnt studied as much i would have struggled because the course is not able to cover all the things that may come up in the written exam. There were 10 in our exam oly 4 or 5 passed and i was the only one not employed in the industry so you see al the fully qualified electricians who had done 3 or 4 years at college dont know everything, everybody is still learning each and every day which is whats needed to keep up with all the changes to enable you to carry out work competently and safely

If you are thinking of doing any exam next then do the 2391-10 if you are working in the industry at the minute then arrange to do a NVQ 2356 before the end date which is 31/3/2011 it can be doe in 10 week min or 2 year max

the nvq2356 and the 2330 are being replaced by 2357 which will be a combination of both and to get on that you have to be working in the industry and will take maybe 3 years or so to complete check them out on C&G website

Good Luck mate in what you do
