what do you use...!!

i currently use a lump hammer but after nearly removing my apprentices arm other month im looking at some thing else...!!

also the lump damages the threads...!

any one use the sds bits to drive them in??

Hi, I use an SDS to 1/2" (socket) adaptor with the appropriate socket and bolt for the coupling

I use a Makita SDS plus drill. I made up a tool by welding an old socket onto a bust sds bit. Works grand and so much easier than trying to hit the wobbling rod whilst holding it with the other hand.

Should be using a coupler threaded on to the rod with a driving head screwed into the coupler, you shouldn't then do damage to the rod threads.

Make your own driving adaptor for a rotary stop SDS. An old suitably sized socket, welded/brazed onto an old cut-down SDS drill and away you go!! Certainly quicker than a lump hammer and the results are better too, because of the lack of swinging around of the rod... Or you can purchase a factory made driving bit for the SDS, but tend to be costly. I've had my head driver for years now that i had the contractor make for me... lol!!!

yeah i do screw the ends on but they seem to be made from cheap crap nowadays and can fray and buckle!

Sounds like there's some confusion with your lump hammer technique. The apprentice is the one who's supposed to be doing the swinging whilst you give gentle encouragement and some stability to the rod.

Got a dewalt sds max rod driver, was about £30 odd I think.

I've been meaning to make a slide hammer arrangement for earth spikes. Most of the spikes we install are in very remote locations and places without power, I always thought a slide hammer with a threaded adapter would work better than a normal sledge hammer.

very similar but the slide was about 2" diameter as the anchors were quite big,if I can find a drawing I will pm you.
