HI - can I just check something please? Where is the best place to put an earthing rod ? Would it be directly outside the front or back door, or can it be placed anywhere outside. Is there any maximum or minimum distance required ?
Thanks.

At least a metre away from the outside wall of the building as a distance less than that would most likely be filled with builder's rubble rendering your rod just about useless.

Just noticed Richard, you mention "an earthing rod" Don't make the mistake of being satisfied with one of these little twigs that pass for rods these days and give some consideration to going more than 1 rod deep. 5/8ths couplable rods are easy to get hold of and with a little effort and time you can get to TN levels of Ze

That really depends on where you are in the UK and the type of soil your presented with.
It's probably unlikely, you'll get down to near TN values with just 2 coupled rods to be honest.
Unless of course your driving into near shore line marshland or similar reclaimed marshland...

Think it's more important to emphasis that depth equals ''stability'' of the earth electrode, (as well as the added benefit of lowering Ra values) that can't be gained in virtually all cases where these thin twigs are used...

Otherwise i'm totally in agreement with you...

well, it's more serious than i was going to say, just having read the title. my comment was going to be ,,, where best to place? ...in the bloody ground.

My apologies E54, a poorly worded post from me. The beer was flowing after a particularly tough couple of days.
Note to self-more think, less jump in half cut:)
