20 years ago, MK was the dog's nuts. Which brand currently has the best blend between quality, features and value?
Mk CU's have never been good I remember doing some PIR's about 40 years ago on 4 MK boards for guy who had recently installed them out of the 4 ELCB's fitted 3 failed took another 5 to get 3 that passed to sort the job out

These days I use Fusebox, Elucian or Hager depending on the customers budget

No need to energise until that Earthing is sorted. They have taken on some liability there.

Ideally none of the circuits on the non RCD side should be on until that earthing is sorted. I only mentioned the shower because you can avoid having one and that would be the most dangerous location to receive an electric shock.

You have sockets in the loft without RCD protection as well.
I have had UK Power networks install an earthing block connected to the the sheathing of the incoming supply from the street.
I want to acquire the earthing cable and organise a pull-through under the floor boards in readiness for the electrician comes to connect up both ends. The routing is a bit tricky and rather than the Sparkie spending hours doing it, I may as well lift the boards etc etc.

My question is what cable size should I purchase - given that it's a 4 bedroom house with a 70amp DNO fuse?

The best person to answer this would be your electrician.
After all, they are the one that will have to sign it off as compliant
