sparkyste1

Hi all, in December 2012 I subbed for a company and following there instructions I was sent t a job to do a consumer unit change and gas/water bonding. upon my arrival and inspection, I found the bonding to already be present and correct in 10mm. The old /unit was metal clad with metal conduit running off to feed the circuits. Due to the new c/u being pvc I placed a bonding clamp on each of the conduit and earthed as appropriate from the consumer units earthing block. The conduit was the earthing supply hence my clamps and re earthing the conduit.
Can anyone please let me know if this was sufficient????

Customer had just moved in and was renovating, they have recently had another sparky n and within 20mins of being on site he has said my work is wrong.
I gave the completed cert to the company I subbed to a have now found out they have not issued it to the customer (believe they might have lost it). I noted on the cert of the renovations as light fittings were hanging due to plastering and painting being done. I now have no proof of this...

Advise please....

hi and thanks for your quick replies, unfortunately I did not keep copies of certs as the company usually does and if I needed to see one for any reason, they would print me a copy off. No longer work/sub to them and split on harsh terms.... know they wont help me.
I asked for the chance to install a metal board as a like for like replacement but as with most companies, cost played a part.. they had not allowed for this when they originally visited and quoted.

I oversized the earth feed, ie from earthing block to earth clamp on conduit 4mm for lights 6mm for sockets and on.... over kill i know

hi, yes I cleaned up the metal conduit and attached a 951 clamp to this. earth wire from the earth block inside the consumer unit to each of the conduits newly installed 91 clamp. The rest of the existing installation was not touched as per my description on the install cert (which was lost)
in all, my job was remove the old c/u, install a new.... and due to pvc c/u fitted I put in the earth wires to the 951 clamps I installed on the metal conduit

A sparky went yesterday to do some work and when he looked in the c/u he said the lighting circuit is not earthed and it's worse because there are metal fittings on the wall and ceiling. I know the earth is in place due to the conduit etc as spoke of above... As for metal fittings... All fitting when I was there were pendants, some of which hanging loose as mentioned. I believe the sparky is trying to get additional money out the customer but due to him saying my work is wrong, I'm starting to doubt myself...

You may (or may not) have made a comment on the cert but backing this up with a caution label on the front of the cu stating only class 2 fittings/ accessories to be used on said cct(s) is a must. That's assuming that the affected cct's don't have separate cpc's and the earthed conduit doesn't terminate at the fittings.

why is it his responsibility at all. there is an earth there they just didnt connect it

I can recall one of the lights which was hanging loose waiting to be replaced was the bathroom light. This had an earth wire to the fitting which I confirmed was in fact an earth wire and not just in position to make it look earthed.

No separate cpc, what's wrong with using the conduit?
I know that this set up with fly leads coming from the conduit isn't usual but if the system is electrically and mechanically sound and an earth has been proven at each point of utilisation then I don't see any major problem.
Maybe it's just me
