Good Morning all

Looking for some advice.

Recently had an electric cooker installed from a company found on check a trade.

Before engineer arrived he advised me to buy a 2.5mm cable to connect to the mains. When purchasing the shopkeeper informed me that cookers usually would need a 6mm cable but the electrician insisted that 2.5mm was sufficient and came and installed it.

I’ve had further advice that this may not be good enough.

Hotpoint were unhelpful and said it would need to be decided by an electrician, they would only tell me the cooker will run on max 35.2A

Model no: HS67V5KHX

Any advice appreciated.

Mike.

Looking at the documentation on the cooker, it has two 1200W elements and two 1800W elements in the hob, so totalling 6kW. The power of the oven is not given, but likely between 1000 and 2000W. So if everything was switched on from cold at once, the power consumption could be as much as 8kW (only for a little while) equating to about 33Amps at 240V. If mains voltage assumed 230V, the current would be 35A, matching the figure given by Hotpoint.
That is more than your 2.5 mm cable is supposed to handle as a sustained load (though it wouldn't destroy it!)

But if you apply diversity, as your electrician is entitled to do, thats 10A plus 30% of (35-10) = 7.5A so total diversified load is 17.5A, which is within the rating of 2.5mm cable. So technically the electrician is right.

But I think some of us would have used at least 4mm wiring anyway! And probably heat resistant flex designed for this purpose, rather than 'cable'.
But the bottom line is what you have is 'safe' and to regs, unless you plan a cooking marathon for weeks on end!
