None that i've ever come across ever had i'm afraid!!! OK they maybe in a far different environment than will be present in the UK, but can't in all honesty say they would fair any better in the UK!!

Here in Cyprus, a repair technician will generally be required on a monthly to 2 monthly basis to undertake repairs or install replacement parts. Doesn't seem to matter which type of opener is involved either, or what type of controls. ....That is mind, ...with a fairly heavy daily constant use.

i have a regular client with electric gates. opened several times a day, been in 5 years, no problems. i'll see if i can find out the manufacturer.

It's going to be very much down to actual frequency of use and the gates designed duty cycle. Get either of them wrong and reliability is going to be an ongoing problem... Most of the automated gate systems over here, are to housing complexes, and as such have a high frequency of use between the hours of 6am to 11pm. the highest usage being early morning, lunch time (everything closes for lunch here..''siesta''.lol!!!) and early evenings. But are also in constant use between these times...

Motorized gates are particularly prone to being unreliable if they're not installed correctly ie the rail must be level and straight, the wheels should be of as large a diameter as possible and good quality bearings, the toothed drive strip must be fitted accurately and the mountings and guides must be secure etc. If they're installed well that's more than half the battle.

There are two commonly used motors here and they're both very reliable and robust but I'm not sure if they're available in the UK.
1 Centurion
2 E.T.

I have a Centurion at home and our gate is borderline commercial in size (4.5 meters). It's about 8 years old and it's never needed attention since I installed it. It wholesales here for around ZAR1400.00 INC VAT (GBP160.00) for the full kit including drive rail, battery etc.

FAAC have long been the market leaders in gate automation, but as Engineer 54 said, you need to specify the correct automation depending on the duty cycle and length/weight of gate. Once you know this, get it installed correctly by someone who's not in a rush and it'll last a lot longer! If possible, mount the control panel inside or under cover...

I have used EasyGates based on recommendation and have found the gear good quality and the general advice, backup very good as well. Only dealt with them for sliding gate stuff so far. They supply Chamberlain gear amongst others and I had to talk to them (Chamberlain) ref some non standard ideas I had, again very helpful.

id help a mate out with some FAC gate openers, ended up contacting them in the States, they too were very helpful. They even faxed me old range manuals that were not available as PDFs etc.

I have been installing electric gates for 17 years & have found that CAME & BFT are both reliable & well built, if installed correctly & serviced at least once a year, will give years of trouble free service. The quality of the installation really does determine how reliable they will be! Don't penny pinch or you'll end up paying a lot more further down the line.

The way the regs are now in regards to safety I would not suggest anybody un-trained in rgeadrs to the machinery directives undertakes fitting them anymore. In the last 5 -6 years there have been numerous child deaths in the UK involving automated gates. The latest one that has just gone to court, within the last month or so, has seen both the installer and company director charged with company manslaughter.
