Went to see a job today where there was a double socket with the oven plugged in and the electric hob wired to a 13a plug top plugged in to the same socket. The customer has said it has always worked fine, but now one of the plates is tripping the rcd (probably faulty)

Now I know ideally this hob should be on its own circuit and wired in 6mm t+e. I cant make out what kw the hob is right now because the sticker is worn out, but I know after working out cooker diversity on a 5kw hob, it works out to 13.52a.

Would the plug top be allowed on a new 5kw hob? Or not?

Cheers

No. This needs a designated circuit as you have correctly pointed out run through a designated double pole switch with low level outlet.

Diversity shouldn't be applied to the hob supply cable, diversity is applied for estimating average current demand, if a 5kw hob had all its plates turn on together then it would see max demand of KW rating until the plates reached temp then the stats would reduce this demand with their switching on and off to maintain the temp they are set at.

In a nutshell a 5kw hob should be fused and supplied with a cable rated for 5kw.

You can get some (such as neff and bosch) ceramic induction hobs that can be rated down from 32, 20, 15, 13amp by pressing the hob on and off in a certain sequence. Ask them if they have the instructions handy.

its a diplomat select and doesn't have any of them settings, i'm sure. now i'm guessing it has never blown the 13a fuse, but then they might have never had more than one plate on at the same time.

i'm going to advise them its wrong and re-run a dedicated circuit from the fuse board. luckily it is just to the left of the oven in a cupboard at high level.

sort out the reason its tripping the RCD before wasting any more time with it.....chances are it`l be a new hob you need......so advise the customer accordingly....

The tripping of the RCD is unlikely to be connected to the cooker being connected via a 13a plug. So, investigate why the RCD is tripping first, as that's the actual fault....but do strongly suggest that the cooker be connected via a dedicated circuit at the earliest convenience. :)

the deciding factor is whether or not the hob/oven came with a flex and plug fitted. if it did, then surely that is manufacturers instructions/design, and should be plugged into a suitable socket.

How does it work with just a plug top? :biggrin5: The maximum allowable for a hob on a FRC is 2kW.

I cant make out what kw the hob is right now because the sticker is worn out.

Don't you have a tongtester?

Regards

"I cant make out what kw the hob is right now because the sticker is worn out"....

You need to find this out before making any decision on the cabling, do a search for the make and model and find out what the Kw ratting is.

Is the plug a molded plug fitted by the manufacturer? If it is I bet it will be below 3Kw.

Thanks Paul I always wondered what a tong-tester was .........................ahem

but I was referring to the highlighted part about the maximum allowable KW you can plug into a RFC .................
