Just a quickie I've been selected to be an electrical supervisor for my firm I work for what are my exact roles and should I ask for more money.

You keep the best on the tools. The tools you make up to foremen, it’s stops them wrecking things! Sorry that’s wrong, tools are useful, foremen aren’t!

To be honest I’ve had some good foremen and some bad. The bad ones leg it at the first sign of a problem, but are the first to start pointing the finger of blame. The good ones will be with you holding the test set, drawings etc. talking through a fault with you.

In time it happens that the boots on the other foot, your stuck in an office wanting to escape back in to the real world. Bloody time sheets, every Monday morning I just wanted to set fire to them. Arranging shift cover used to drive me insane.

It got even worse when I was made shift production manager!
That lasted a year before I walked out to a different company, back on the tools.

Delboy, the first thing you need to do is to get some kind of written statement from the company on what your new responsibilities will be. Having received this you can then decide how much more you are being expected to do and base any request for a pay increase on that. The other thing you need to explore is whether you require additional training to undertake any new roles. Make sure you are clear on where responsibility lies for compliance with technical standards ( NICEIC and the like) before accepting anything. But aside from that Congratulations, I hope it is a real promotion and not just added work for no reward!

thought it was "the first thing you need to do is to get some decent food".....then the alien thats in us all breaks out..lol.....

I agree with Arnold, unfortunately job titles mean nothing nowadays, I would insist on getting a full job description so you know where you stand then from that you can decide what fair pay would be.

The 'Qualified Supervisor' in NICEIC terms is the one person in the company who accepts full legal responsibility for all technical aspects relating to the electrical safety and compliance of all the installations that company undertakes. The person at which the buck stops. The person who has to stand up in court if it all goes pear shaped.
Even I would pay such a person a few extra quid for that.

i got the supervisors job at my work, and to be honest, its totally different from what i was doing before. I spend more time 'looking' at jobs, deciding whats to be done, organizing materials and man power, risk assessments and the likes. It is still a good job, and happy with the way its turning out. The one major downfall is when it comes to actually doing the work, its becoming rarer and rarer that i have my hands on the tools. To busy being called to 'look' at other jobs. This of course draws a lot of slagging from the other boys, skiver and the likes, but hopefully all in good jest. I do still get to work on the tools at least 40% of the week, more if we are busy, but there is the times you want to pull your hair out as you've spent the whole day running about yet feels like you've achieved nothing.

Here in Scotland, i think the rate for supervisor is 10p - ÂŁ1, per hour, depending on your companies decision.

NOTE;

the hardest bit i found, is pulling up the guys you worked with for years, for things like lateness, playing with phones, PPE, basically any non conformance to H + S. Its hard, and a neccessary evil, but laying down the law early, is a must. But i'm sure the guys you work with are all sound and will work for you without too much agro ;-) And if things go wrong, its your problem, thats why you have to be harsh.

Anyway, i think it would be a great move career wise, and well worth it. Good Luck.
