Hi, I am trying to find some info on electricians with rope access (IRATA). I am thinking of doing the IRATA course as I want to work outside of Europe. There seems to be little info available about this. Is there any electricians here working through rope access.

Re: Electricians with Rope access + compex

I got about 8 week's work on a power station which was a good start. Since then no rope access work only electrical. I did not expect to be on the ropes all the time, but a little more experience would be nice.

You manage to get any offshore work ? Thinking of doing my survival and rope access in Jan .

I have been trying to get offshore work but had no luck. Earlier this year I did my survival, rope access and compEX to increase my chances but still no luck. I have applied to jobs all over the world and lately I have been applying for roustabouts, catering assistance, tool pusher, anything to get my foot in the door. This was some advice from another forum. I still have not had any luck.

Hey Guys
I'm a licensed electrician from the States with over 12 years experience and an IRATA Level 3 Rope access Tech with a compex ticket. I recently moved to Asia because there isn't all that much rope access electrical work happening so far. I've had a good start out here so far and been involved with a few Ex surveys and trace heat installs offshore. I have a EU passport as well and was wondering what how the licensing in the UK works because I'd like to be able to work in the North Sea as well. I've done a little research, but some info from you guys would be really helpful. I've been looking at the 17th Edition course. Any other suggestions?

Much appreciated!

licensed electrican from the states? i am sure this does not apply to you and i am sure not all american 'electricians' do this, but i have not found one yet and i have met hundreds, (i spend all day every day making american installs safe) to work in the Uk my first word of advice would be to go to a UK college, re-train, forget everything you have ever learned in the US, learn to test. throw away those frankly dangerous twist connector things i constantly cut out, learn to earth stuff, learn to colour code cables. learn that its called live, phase, line, anythng but HOT! learn what an RCD is supposed to do, learn that an earth spike is not 3 inches of copper pipe, learn that a safe install is not judged by if it goes on fire or not, learn to calc cables, learn that the world has moved on from square D boards that stopped being used in europe in the 70's. i know that they are detroit made, that does not make them good! buy a regs book and read it. stop quoting Ohms law in answer to every question you do not understand. :)

i once sent a 'master Electrician' to earth metal steps leading into shower blocks and offices and he came back to tell me one of them had no continuity when he tested it (after i showed him what a continuity tester did) i went to check and he was testing continuity of earth across a wooden set of steps......

.... and there was me thinking you were wanting to lynch a customer who hasn't paid your invoice on time !! :hanged:

Well the truth is, there are good and bad electricians out there. You seem to have worked with quite a few bad ones. Yes our installation methods are different but my reason for joining this forum was to get more information about your methods and how the certification process not to argue who and what method is better. That doesn't interest me. I just want to learn and become an even better and knowledgable electrician. If someone has some info to help me do that, I'm all ears and it's really appreciated

I done my rope access about a year ago. I wish i hadent bothered to be honest. Ive been offered about 6 jobs in that year from companies such as cape, absen and a few others. All paying less than £170 per day. Absen had the cheek of offering £120 for a 10 hour day. A bit of an insult. In my opinion a waste of money unless your extremely commited to it and use it to specialise in something like NDT inspection. Obviously theres the offshore route but as a level one with little experience you havent got a prayer. Sorry to be negative but just my opinion. The course is bloody hard as well, never used deep heat so much in my life lol.

Hey dr, Yeah I do, I'll send them along to you

Epuelsch, I would love some contact details for work in SEA if possible. I am currently working in New Zealand, but would love to be back in Asia. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
