This file should help out anyone that has had trouble filling out the ENA G59 application form.

It has explanatory notes which should make things a little clearer.

You can ignore section 2 - It is not relevant to G59 PV applications.

Good work , SolarCity !

I think this should be a sticky ?

I hope this will not offend but thought i would add a couple of notes as well ?

In Part 1a , where it asks for the grid reference . I found - UK Grid Reference Finder to be very helpful at pinpointing the meter head , grid reference if you knew where it was located on a property .

Also in part 1a , where it asks for " Registered capacity (maximum active power export ) " , MAKE SURE you cross out the MW and substitute it for KW , as i forgot to do it on a 82 kw job and nearly missed the above 50kw tariff drop deadline over it !

Luckily my client was quite influential and i think the engineer processing the paper work thought better than to put a spanner in the works by not warning me ! If he had not it would have been moved to another department that handled the big boy applications and at that point early last year there was a potential one year wait for a answer .:rolleyes4:

Also don't forget to include all of your inverter speck sheets as these tell them a large amount of what they ask for anyway , just in case you have made a mistake with the data you have entered .

Thanks for the input, DP. Good advice.

Any other input is gratefully received.

I'll make this a sticky.

Hi,

I was reading the sticky tags when this one struck a chord as I'm about to submit an application to the DNO for an 80kW system.

My client wants to put as much solar on the roof as possible in an attempt to cover as much energy usage within the building they occupy. They believe they may get around 75% and this includes weekends when the building will be empty.

My concern is that the DNO will now take 3 months to decide if any network strengthening is required and there will be associated costs.

So...

(1) I've know idea if strengthening is likely or what it could cost and at the risk of asking a question like how long is a piece of string? Can anyone provide me with an idea?

(2) I would like to give the client some other options like going for a 50kW system (I believe this is less of a problem with the DNO ). Then perhaps adding to it later, but I'm sure this has its problems too.

Any advice is greatfully received.

Thank you

1. Very difficult to say. 80kWp is not exactly a big system. If it is a heavy industrial area then there shouldn't need to be any reinforcement works necessary.

2. Best to speak to the DNO. They'll be able to give you a good idea over the phone, prior to an initial survey.

ask the dno if they do fast turnaround initial estimates? that should give you a good idea what's going to be possible.

The challenge is that the network may not be able to cope with exporting / back feed of 80kW on the August Bank holiday weekend, that's where the issuse arise, every system in the UK pumping out full power, yet everyone out barbecuing instead of turning the oven on :)

Only one way to find out - send the G59 in.

Hi, thank you for all your replies. I have sent the application form in but getting a standard answer of wait upto 3 months for an offer! Problem is the customer won't like the potential extra cost of network strengthening and may kill the job. Is it worth considering a 50kW system and then adding to it to make the DNO application any easier?,

Many thanks for the copy of the G59 Application Form. We have completed one of these forms on a 50KW 3ph. installation c/w G59/2 relay.

We are extending the system by a further 20KW and therefore have to upgrade the relay. The manufacturer has requested an answer to G59/2 or G59/3. We have not come across the latter, does it apply to any install with more than one type of re-generation system e.g. PV + ground pump?

G59/3 is the updated version of G59/2.

I'm a bit surprised you even need the relay though at those levels, it'd usually be type tested inverters.

Many thanks for your prompt reply. Western Power insisted on installing the G59/2 relay for the initial 50KW install. It is W.P. that have told us to upgrade the relay, in which case I'll complete the G59/2 form.
