Morning all,

I have a customer who has just had a new house built with separate garage/office block.

So now my customer needs an Internet connection in there (pref wifi) and the wifi signal from the house doesn't quite reach, I've seen home plugs which connect to the router one end and replicate the wifi the other end using the mains to carry the signal.

Will this work through the house wiring back to main incomer and down the sub main to the garage ccu?
I thought the garage earth could be isolated from the house but house earthing is TT and has been taken over to garage on SWA

Anyone any experience of these in a similar situation?

Thanks

Hi Ash, Similar problem at home after extension built. Signal wouldn't go through cavity wall. I've got a BT Broadband External Flex plugged in by the router & receiver plugged in the extension. Works a treat. Can't think why it shouldn't work with TT.Are you saying that the whole electrical installation is TT?

I've seen mixed reports on all of the various makes of these - sometimes they work great and other times are next to useless. There's a few threads on here about them already, have a search (in the IT section, probably).

Hi
Yes entire install is TT out in the middle of nowhere!
My mate is very good with IT but was unsure with the outbuilding being on a separate circuit. I can't see how it make a difference but I don't really understand how they work!

Mine works and on separate ring final circuits. Can't see it being a problem, as stated above as long as on same phase.

We use these a lot and they sometimes work fine and sometimes not. In most cases I have seen, as long as the phase is the same they work over a submain

Maplins £30 TP Link seem to be the most reliable ones we have used

I have several of these installed in my house to extend my network they work very well and connection speeds between them are good.

Have used both solwise and tp link makes. The only problems I have had was when I had the solwise ones had to keep pairing the units every so often. Tp link ones once set up have never had to touch them.

How far is the separate garage/office block from the house / existing wifi router. If you have a wireless router / access point with removable antennas you could replace one of these with an external directional antenna pointing towards the garage/office block. Did this a lot in factories and commercial premises a number of years ago and built some very large wifi networks with good results

Why would the RCD fail … yes it can happen but then it may not. Without it you have no protection on the TT System
