Hi Guys

I seem to do a lot of retrofit external lights to properties where they don't want damaged walls inside. So, only way to do it is to run cables externally. Now as we all know, you're not allowed to run 6242Y outside without protection from UV etc. So obvious options are: to run it in round conduit (but terminations via terminal boxes etc don't look too pretty) use SWA, but very few fittings allow direct termination.

Can you use HITUF / NYY-J (i guess if you could there similar issues to SWA), or is there anything else out there that looks better, speeds installation and eases termintion into domestic style external fittings?

Many thanks

Tony

Perhaps I'm just old school but IMO a nice conduit run into a stop end box and then a drilled box lid with a 20mm stuffing gland fitted into the lid, with flex terminated that way looks so much better than a piece of black flex clipped on a wall.

I use black rubber or PVC flex, appropriately sized and clipped into the mortar seams. Rubber is more UV stable than PVC so better if it's going to be in direct sunlight.

IMO black flex [visually] melts into the wall far better than conduit. Also try to keep it out of direct 'eye line', especially horizontal runs.

I find that flex can look 'scruffy' clipped any distance and much prefer conduit with flex from end box close to fitting where poss, much in the way that malcolmsandford says.

Even better, ... A standard cast spouted box lid, with the appropriate gasket fitted...

Hi guys, just to ressurect this thread instead of starting another, in a weeks time i need to supply an outbuilding via a 3 metre catenary wire. What cable type would you guys suggest for this?
