My auntie is going to be putting a new fan in her bathroom, it's not possible to put the isolator switch outside the bathroom. The only place it can go is in a zone where 240v is not permitted It's about 2m away from shower. Is there any reason the 12v transformer can't be put in the feed side of the switch so that there's no 240v at switch?

You say 2 metres away from the shower! How big is you're shower enclosure? 600 mm from the edge puts the source and switch outside of the zones.

Is your Auntie a quallified sparks? LOL.

So where are you thinking of siting the tranny? Because from the sound of your post there's going to be mains voltage in a non permitted zone anyway

The corner of the bathroom is boxed off, this is the wall the fan is going to be on so the transformer would be in this space.

600mm from the edge...I thought it had to be more than this.

600mm from the outside edge of the shower enclosure/bath is ouside of the zones, there is a diagram in BS7671 or the On Site Guide.

Don't forget, some Transformers only have an Intermittent rating & are not designed to be powered all the time, if you put the Transformer on the Supply side of your switch it's going to be permanently powered & may not last long. It could also be a fire hazard if left on permanently due to overheating.

And the transformer may take an appreciable amount of power, even when not running the fan, and so cost more to run than it should.

Hi guys, dont want to hijack but i have a few questions too. I usually just go the ELV rout on the fans to be on the safe side although it can be a pain. my q's are:
Is there any set height for the triple pole switch? ive always done the norm - above bath door or low level if enough room outside bathroom within reason but in the same token can be a pain then returning back up to the transformer and/or fan. These transformers are mega ugly generally and have surface mounted boxes. Is it ok to bang them safely mounted in the loft somewhere near the hatch? Obviously where insulation has no chance of reaching it.

Cheers in advance guys!
