few questions re rewires

Hi

Just got a few questions I have never been told a straight answer to, but just peoples opinions/ prefs..

For rewires do you have to use capping over your cables or is clipping and just plastering over on top perfectly acceptable if the cable is protected by a 30ma rcd?

Next question:

for socket points under worktops in kitchens, do you HAVE to have a spur above the work top to isolate? or is this just good practice? what if the worktop has a sink in it, not really much room to have a spur above the worktop, without being to close to the sink.

Doesnt matter if it's protected by an RCD or not, capping is there to protect the cable from the plasterers tools. You dont need to use it, it doesnt provide mechanical protection for the cable. Some people use it, some dont.

Well if theres a sink above you could use a bank of switches sited together as is usually done these days.

Just out of interest, and I don't mean to hijack this thread, but how do these grid switches for appliances comply with the 2m isolation rule? I realise that there would be a socket nearer the appliance but if this is not accessible, then these switches could easily by more than 2m away from the appliance.

A few carefully placed plugs and screws does the job i find. Have never used capping so could not comment on it.

When i was on council rewires, we we required to use this oval conduit. The wall chaser cut the perfect chase width wise and the conduit used to fit snugly into the chase.

i always use oval conduit and hold it in place with masonry nails either side. as for the spurs there councils we work for require there to be a spur above the worktop. as long as they are 300mm min away from sinks and cookers you'll be ok.

If plasterer is dotting and dabbing, dont use capping, if its traditional two coat jobbie, i use capping

I'm afraid I clip direct as its usually always dot and dab, but I check the plasterer is happy with this. As for using oval for the sake of a rewire, how long is modern twin and earth supposed to last? 50 plus years? Unless the new rewire involves fittings being in exactly the same place I honestly don't see the need, although I respect the workmanship of those that do.

the beauty of using oval tube is that after kevin kitchen has drilled a cable, you can come along and work magic without smashing all the pretty new tiles off the wall.

the word "capping" isnt found anywhere in bs7671 so draw your own conclusions.

as for switches above sockets , i just cant be arsed arguing with the never-ending good practice yarns weve already heard.

Where is this 2m isolation rule then? Coz it sure as hell aint in the regs!

You've been talking to or taught by someone who is very poorly educated and unfortunately very easily suseptable to heresay and myth.

With regards to the OP, I've never used capping or oval conduit. Instead I use a good plasterer!

I always thought you used capping/oval etc because the plaster over a period of time degraded the pvc in the cable. ,
