hi,

i have been in the trade for 10 years, and have often carried work out on my own. i have had the odd apprentice come and go over the years, but they seem to get put off once they realise they have to put down there fancy cutters and clean screwdrivers, for there cold and rusty scotch comb or once they get to a stage where they start to be more competent with there first/second fix, they think hey should be earning 100-120 a day

im just wonder if theres a more realiable place for finding aprrentices in my area, i have heard of the jtl scheme. im curious to find out if any one has hired an apprentice throught this scheme and how its worked out for them.

also if theres any other schemes similar that i should know about

im based in London and i refuse to give work to people who are not in college or have finished college, i think the trade is dying enough all ready from these cheap labourers.

Thanks

Have a look here....

Apprentices - Apprenticeships

I rang JTL who sent me there approved candidates list that I went through and chose an apprentice and took him on but JTL wanted him to go a collage out of town and on block release which we didnt really want. So I just rang up our local collage and got him on there.

So you could go through JTL or ring up your local collage...

I think it depends on the individual. As I understand it the schemes will only 'take on' an apprentice if they've already found their own job, they don't usually find jobs for them. In either case they don't clone or even train the apprentices themselves, that's down to the local colleges, and even then you get 'good' students and 'bad' students.
What's wrong with someone who's finished college?

i just take someone on who has done some of there 1st year, least you now you can ask the tutor who is good on the course, that what happen to me I got take on by someone who did the same

the jtl are just a joke, I did there test, then got a letter to say I passed, and all they said is use there name when you call or write to companys for work I did that and company just said never heard of them, so really they do f all to help you get a job

In all fairness when I was starting my apprenticeship 15 years ago my first port of call was JTL who actually informed me of a local company that were looking for apprentices.

Just my opinion but sometimes it is better to get a young lad who is good to go and can work unsupervised. So ok it cost's you more than a apprentice but you have to look at the fact you can instantly start earning more money from him because you can start a job with him then leave him if other job's come in.

Apprentices are like your own children,in as much as the responsibility and time they can take...the only saving grace is if push comes to shove, you can jetison them and sleep easy. Expect no easy ride or instant extra income stream...even if it's having to listen to 8 hours of "why me bird ditched me..." :lips:

I know quite a number of young lads who are more than keen to get themselves an apprenticeship and they're not scared of hard work. The thing is, i'm not in a position where I could take someone on at the moment and up here it's a case of 'it's not what you know, it's who you know' most of the apprenticeship go to those that have family members already working in the company so they're basically handed the job without any effort and they have the attitude of 'they wont sack me cos my dad works there'........it really annoys me!

your right there, i managed to get my apprenticeship after doing loads of work experience from a mate of his.

he bassically told me straight that he doesnt have the range of work to do nvq.

forward a couple weeks later I started with a friend of his in a different company.

it tends to be only big firms and a couple smaller firms that train anybody now, most firms want people already qualified because its less work for them

:edit

even if you end up doing work experience in your free time e.g. on sat etc, I run into the same guys from time to time and people do remember

you might find yourself working for them in the future even if you are not trained by them

A lot of people look down on local authority work but the apprentices in the ones I've subbed for have been in a fantastic position for getting experience of different types of installations.
Think about it, they all do an element of domestic work, then there's schools and public buildings which is broadly similar to commercial, every one of these public buildings has a plant room which is where they get their industrial experience from.
