Hi all i have installed a fire alarm panel in a house let out for students, electric paid for by card, problem is no credit no alarm. electric supplyer will not put in second meter. any suggestions how to get round this. Owner does not want to get rid of card meter for obvisious reasons. Thanks

Think i know what replies your going to get on this one so be prepared for incoming fire.
As designer and installer you should have made sure that a dedicated supply was available really mate so how is this going to comply.
You obviously know what is required, to ask. Like to know how your going to produce a cert on it in that condition.

id fit an additional psu with 2 38a batterys, that should keep it going for for a while on battery only, and as the panel will beep every few seconds the credit will soon be on the meter..

Thanks lads, keep the firing to a min. put the alarm in to at least give protection untill i'd get a reply from elect.supplier. (short notice).
I know should have sorted out things first, but owner was willing to keep credit going untill supply sorted. Thought myself a landlords supply would'nt be a prob.

Yup, cant disagree there. The alarm from an insurance and LA HMO fire regs point of view is useless, assuming its fitted to 5839 in the 1st place.Supply should have been sorted before. If it doesnt work now I hope to god OP has very good professional indemnity insurance.

if the supply is there when he fits it and his standby capacity is within limits then he's ok,its not up to him to make sure the customer pays his electicity bill..

I am right in saying this building is only occupied by tennants/students and is not a maintained or supervised enviroment

edit
Is any emergency lighting on this same coin supply ?

just put it on your handover cert that the panel should have its own supply and its on a temp supply via a pre pay meter ,its the landlords problem not yours

I have many of these multi occupied buildings that i maintain for landlords, each one has a main supply intake that has been split in two. One is landlords supply and the other is credit supply for tenants. On the landlords supply is all the hallways, toilets and emergency lighting supplies and the fire alarm, there is also a cleaners socket with a keyswitch for the hoover in the hallway. This was the the minimum spec the council would accept with the licence the landlord has to have.
I guess no landlord wants to spend money if they think they can getaway with it but I bet they want the certificates at the end though.
All these type places are cash cows for them and never spend money that can be used to buy the next new car.

Same here, agree 100%

I to have buildings with split supply. Electric supplier won't do split supply for alarm only.Guess the landlord will have to splash out with seperate stair lights etc. to gain split supply. Thanks for replys,
Dan
