I have a neighbour who wants wall lights, they got some but there is not enough space to have either internal or external swa glands as the back box is small and the bulb fitting is right by the incomming hole for the cable. Also I have loads of 2 core swa so was going to use that to keep costs down for them. But if I can't use that then ho hum.
What I was thinking, as the supply end will all be earthed could I not crimp a few bits of the steel armour to a wire (or solder it) to connect to the earth terminal? Bit cowbowish I know, but I am not sure what I could do apart from buy 3 core, which if I can help it I would rather use up the stuff I have.

A "bit" cowboyish?

No offence, but I reckon you should rethink that statment...

Would you know what the equivalent CSA for copper a couple of strands of steel armour would be so you could determine whether it would be acceptable as a CPC just for starters?

Forget doing that, if the cable is just to be clipped to the wall and there are no underground runs to make, why not use 1.5 hi-tuf and dome top glands they take up less room than swa glands. If space is tight at the fitting you could always run the cable low level and tee off with a wiska box below the lights and run a single hi-tuff to the fitting.

I assume said contractor is part of a Part P scheme (NICEIC, Napit, few others..) in which case complain to them. They'll investigate (in theory)...
