The electrician needs to adhere to the current regulations so it maybe that in the light of no 30mA rcd additional protection for cables that he maybe installing buried in the walls , that changing the cu gives the installer this option and in my opinion improves the current state of the electrical installation as a whole in terms of safety and current compliance with the regulations.

In my opinion the main issue is not an upfront RCD. They main issue is that there is no 30mA RCD protection, only 100mA time-delayed.
That isn't time delayed, the T would be a D if it were, I think:)

What would you do then Westy? change the CU without regards to any testing or inspection, cus all this Muppet has done is look at the CU and thought "hang on some easy money to be made here.

We haven't even seen the whole CU, so it's quite hard to say what is or is not required or what any one of use would do. For all we know there could be a whacking great hole in the top of the existing CU.

We don't know what this person has or has not done, you have just made the assumption that he has only looked at the CU and not done anything more.

Or would there be an s for selective?
No the part number on the front would end in a "D". Don't think you would get a Proteus 63A time delayed rcd, not that I dabble with such a brand of course.

could always fit a biscuit tin round it....

1. amd. 3 compliant.

2. abomination now out of sight.

The cooker manufacturer may even specify 30mA protection, i have come accross this once reading a manual! That proteus rccb looks suspiciously like the old shape contactum.... And the new model wont line up properly as ive tried before.....

Looks like the OP has lost interest now anyway....

Thank you for all the advice
- i am awaiting a written estimate with a breakdown of work to be done - then i will decide what to do next - I think a second opinion is probably best at this stage

If you've asked a question in here chances are you instinctively feel something is nit right with what you're being told. It might be he wants too make a bigger job of it but also might be he doesn't want the job & is trying to put you off.
I would get someone else in & trust your instincts regarding what they say. I have found some excellent people through checkatrade.

Just my 2 p worth!

If you do get CU replaced get one with spare spaces for the future.

Cheers
Richard

Den,

I would advise you to get the EICR done first. If your existing c/u is non-compliant with BS7671, the EICR will detail this. I believe that an EICR should be done after a new C/U is fitted any way.

Cheers

I reckon if you are that worried about your electrics, an EICR would be best done prior to any work, don't you?

or at least a basic test/inspection to determine:
1. is a replacement CU advisable.
2. is the installation in good enough state to connect to a new CU with RCD protection etc.

can't wait for monday. 9 p.m. i think. star trek iv... the voyage home.

better not allow you to see St. Trinian's then.

Nice feedbacks.
  1. First the client house could be in a farm where service are TT and they requires that size RCD to protect the earth. "Just playing devil advocate".
  2. An EICR is required after change of of CU, will the £350 include EICR, supply and install or will inspection and testing will be invoiced differently?
