Fuse box question

Can someone tell me what the middle white fuse would be used for?

We have an issue where we lose power to everything to the left of it (downstairs lights, upstairs sockets, heating, downstairs sockets) and we think everything to the right works, I know oven and upstairs lights do. Nothing trips and to get it working we have to turn the middle fuse off, press the black button and turn it on again.

Any ideas why and what could be causing the issue, happened twice now. Is it likely to be dangerous as it doesn’t trip?

Plan to get electrician in at the end of month when paid but would like to have an idea of what it might be also.

So you don't eant a new member to learn from his mistakes then?

The purpose of communication is to communicate with one another. If a customer tells me a consumer unit is a fuse box, a lamp is a bulb, or even if a switch is a light plug, I see and understand the intent of the communication.
It is not helpful of me to ignore their intent and to correct them over issuing helpful advice. That is just pedantry.

Two outside lights, one always on motion detecting, both seem to be working. No sockets.

When did we last have some serious rain? Could be water in an outside light or sensor fitting.
If the fault manifests again you could reset the RCD but switch off all the MCBs to the left. Then switch one MCB on at a time. If the RCD trips with only one MCB on that would point to the fault being on that particular circuit. You may well need a spark though, with some test equipment to pinpoint it.

Have you had your electrical installation fully tested in the last ten years?

The most likely items which will cause this to happen are your kettle, iron or washing machine. Unplug them when not using them and see if this stops the tripping or monitor their use to see if the RCD trips when these are in use.
