Personally I think A CW SWA gland looks a lot better in a finished job without the shroud than they do with it, especially when there are 8 RGM glands in a row next to it, but does any one know of any reason why not fitting the shroud would be a problem?
The gland is indoors in a dry and heated space so no worries about environmental considerations, and even if there were I think the shroud only ever serves to trap moisture around the gland which achieves a high IP rating on its own.

Obviously the shroud is useful for some people if they are not very good at actually fitting the gland properly, but I like to think I'm reasonably capable of fitting an SWA gland properly

And that goes both ways but you don't see me trying to debunk a few dubious comments that you have made in the past. I'm not here to argue but seen you along with a few merry men who use the forum act like the wolf pack. I'm not a sheep fella I won't be ridiculed. End of.

Then you are missing the point of the forum, if I make a mistake and nobody points it out then how the hell can I or anyone else learn from that mistake?

No need to try belittling me mr big man. HYGROSCOPIC effects can cause certain material to warp if it's exposed to moisture. I'm a new member mate but not a ********. Treat members with respect.

Firstly as a new member I will only give you a verbal warning - if you have issue with any member or post then you have 2 options:-

- Ignore
- Report

Reacting and taking it on yourself to respond in such a manner can only cause conflict.

To note! - Hygroscopic is the ability of a material to readily take up moisture from the air. The Mineral in MICC is such a substance.

Reading the post you have issue with, I cannot see why you reacted the way you did, you made a spelling error and it was corrected and the statement you made in post 32 was incorrect, the glands are IP rated when fitted correctly but shrouds holding water would lead to accelerated oxydisation of the copper sheath and brass gland and in the chemical industry corrosion may be a added issue.

I don't mind people making mistakes we all do. But your missing the point I found the message to be in a vindictive sarcastic manner. And why did you assume I was referring hygroscopic effects with MICC. The guy was writing about Compex to be which I was referring to.

But your comment made no sense as far as I can tell. Regardless of whether it be MICC or just cable glands.

Trapped water doesn't cause a hygroscopic effect. Being hygroscopic is a property of a material, such as the powder in MICC or salt, brake fluid etc etc. It is just a term which indicates that a material will absorb or adsorb water from the surrounding atmosphere.

Trapping water inside a gland shroud will not cause that gland to become hygroscopic. I doubt anyone would make a cable gland which is designed to give an IP rating out of a hygroscopic material.

I entirely agree with you so far in this general line of argument dave.

However, I would point out that many plastic IP rated stuffing glands are made of hygroscopic material, the obvious one being nylon. It's just that any change in properties isn't sufficient to cause a significant reduction in performance.

I wish I had! I didn't miss it, I pushed my luck a bit too far and snapped it over ending it.

I'm working on a plan to repair (bodge) the situation.

Back to below floor level, a 20mm galv through box and new piece up to your DB ?
