Got a call from a mate earlyer...

Well a few weeks back a mate of mine called to ask me to do a job for him. Basically fitting an extractor fan in a bathroom.

I was too busy so the 'Builder' doing the bathroom got a 'Spark' to come and do it for them. Now today i got a call to come and have a look at the job as they didn't think it was right

When i got there i was told there were two basicaly 'Young lads' doing the work and they had wrecked the ceiling and smashed an expensive lampshade on the landing

Walking up the stairs i see the cover off the pendent on the landing and a new 2 core 1.5mm T&E wired into the switched live :D so they then run it in the loft space (over the joists) and down the inside of the bathroom wall, drilled through to a surface mounted switched fused spur on the outside of the bathroom above the door.

Then from that into the loft space (over joists) down the wall to a ceramic air vent that had been smashed from a rectangle into a resembled 'round' hole. What was more shocking is the fan needs to be selv as it can be touched from the bath easily AND the loft hatch is in the bathroom with the existing fitting (pendent) right next to it!

Going to rewire and isolte accordingly with IP rated DL's and a ELV fan fed from above. How the hell does this stuff still go on

not saying i would'nt fit selv, but it dont need to be so i would not go to the job ranting about it needing to be selv . i agree it sounds like a poor job for what its worth

For the record i'm going to be fitting selv regardless as it's piece of mind :) but thanks anyway

Yeah Lester from the college and also the Dave Tinsley courses i've done. Good guy :)

personaly i would not be too worried as long as its ip 44 and rcd protected

And SELV!

Extractor fans installed within zone 1 must be at least IPX4.
Extractor fans installed within zone 1 must be fitted with 12v SELV motors with the SELV transformers and isolators fitted outside of zone 0, 1 & 2
