Has the 'Respected Member' tag had its day?

Surely every member is respected.

It sounds ever so cliquey.

I think in the current times when everybody should be totally equal, denoting who's 'respected' it a bit cheeky.

It used to be called "Elite Member" - Christ, imagine if we had that these days?!?!?!
On TilersForums.com it's now 'Trusted Advisor' but even then the advice changes and it's marking old now inaccurate posts as if the post should be trusted. And it can cause a bit of a shitstorm every now and again because some poor sod has tiled their bathroom the old way and their tiles are falling off.

I've put a poll up to get a feel for it. But it's not to say if either outcome is clear - that we will go for it.

It's up for discussion.

Maybe make it 4. But if a post can't be said in a sentence it should be left to the like buttons.

Google is hammering us on pages with lots of one words in. So moving forward we need to use at least sentences in public forums.

I thought the idea was to share information, no knows everything. Life is a great teacher which I have found to be the best source of knowledge there is. Having "classes" is too much like our politicians. Which again from life's experiences I try to avoid like Ebola .

Just read my posts mate. You will see I try and have fun and also give out advice. Whats the point in living if you can't have any fun.

I don’t see any harm in keeping respected members if done properly. For example, I’m on a mk1 golf forum and we have different levels of members, like ‘newbie’ ‘old timer’ ‘local hero’ etc and this works really well in the sense that the more experienced members help the newbies or less experienced with car related issues and repairs. Newbies aren’t afraid to ask questions which others may find silly and they know they will happily get good answer with good advice from someone who knows what they are talking about. The same as I’d be happy taking advice or information from a ‘respected member’ on here.

But rather than remove all together. Review each member with a tag every 12 months to see if they are performing as per tag and remove if necessary.

This is what I don't understand. It's a very simple solution.
If a post get reported then, I presume, the staff with then review the report. If the report if found to be 'true' then the member gets notified of said report. If they have a banner that goes against these reports then, after a number of reports the banner gets removed.
Simple.

Don't see why anyone would have a problem tbh. If I was someone who invested years of time on a site I would like it to be shown to any young gun who turns up. Nothing wrong with that.

I'm still of the opinion a badge ,is a time efficient way to quickly asses the "Quality / Background / experience" of members.
For new comers looking for a quick bit of advice.

Joined up here to ask a question about ufheating a while back.
How about changing your 'respected member' tag to 'Trusted advisor' as we have on TF, gives new posters a bit of confidence knowing they're getting tried and trusted advice from someone that's earned it through giving good advice in a respectful manner. Not saying that members without a tags advice isn't to be taken seriously at all, but if a trusted advisor says "cut the black wire" I'd cut it like Tom Cruise...BOOM!!!
The tags...whatever they are headed up are hard earned and Imo show who makes an effort to keep coming back daily and offer good sound advice... Thats just my two penneth, I'm heading back over to my comfort zone in Tilers Forum now....buy a dust pan and brush you lot, over and out

I agree, every one should be respected, I think the tag was a good idea but the title was not thought out fully.
Maybe a "Guru" tag or "Engineering Expert" or "Sage" or such thing should be used to identify those who make quality and knowledgeable contributions.

I'm not clued-up enough to know what level should earn that "respect", but as i said before...it ain't broke, so don't fix it.
I would however record that since i retired 2 years ago and more, I have learned so much on here. I'm not trying to ply my trade as an electrician, I simply want to learn and occasionally do the odd installation for proper electricians to check and connect. I have installed lighting, heating, RFCs and radials, but I stop short at the CU...that's when someone with experience comes in, checks and tests, then connects. It's a hobby for me, and I do appreciate it can be a dangerous one, so I never do anything that exceeds my knowledge base. The labels for some on here are valuable to me, albeit I have made my own assessment in some cases, as no system is foolproof.
I will never be an electrician. I may aspire to be a competent installer of systems of various types. I hope I will achieve that status. I read a lot, I have watched thousands of hours of videos, all those that Chris whatsisname and John Ward have made, and I truly believe that even with all those hours under my belt I will never be able to claim to be an electrician, and certainly not after 18 hours. I have learned so much here, and on those videos...and I believe that a proper badge system for members on here is a good thing. It gives amateurs a signal, and it gives professionals a signal too.
Plus, the banter is brilliant!
OK, awarding a badge is subjective, but honestly it is easy to spot the bullshi**ers.
Now that I have said my piece, I am going back to installing my kitchen lighting...I have decided not to use cat5e after all...I'm going for cat6!
Oh, you may laugh...but solid core cat6 is perfect for me because I have a big bag of RJ whatsit cat6 connectors, and the LED stuff runs on cats whiskers...which some of the older members may recall as being the only way to listen to the radio...
or is that just me?

I feel the same way pirate....I’m late to this game and know I’ll never be an “electrician” and I have no desire to at my age....I did the electrical trainee course as an addition to my business, and don’t regret it, but I’ll be honest it has got me really interested in electrics and I use this forum as a training aid, I jump on new threads prepare the answer I’d give myself and then wait for the respected members/forum mentors to come on and then I compare.....being doing that for a year now and I’ve learnt more on here than I did on my course.....so I’ll say the badges should stay! They’ve earned them and the advice is priceless!
