I have been asked to rewire this foreign bought lamp, or at least assess it for the safe possibility of doing so.

Now it was supplied with a two pin plug and flex and the lampholder is plastic. The metal body is obviously unearthed.

I was going to re flex it in 3 core and earth the body, but on closer inspection the contacts look dangerous to me.

I can fit my pinky finger down in there and touch the live terminal.

My opinion is leave the thing unflexed and let them use it as an ornament only as to me it's as bad a reversed polarity on a metal edison screw lampholder. (which by the way the father of the owner has recently had a belt off I have just found out so I will be looking to go over and fix that too!)

change that lampholder to BC...
or the safety retracting type edison screw..

Dunno whether what Voltz is on about is difficult for us to see in the pics. It looks to me like you might still be able to touch both the contacts even with a lamp screwed in but there's no perspective so I can't really tell. Not a huge deal though.

When rewiring I would be tempted to make it double insulated and take the flex sheath right into the holder, like most metal lamps these days. Seems to be a grommet at the exit point already.

As for BC lampholders with self-isolating contact plungers, I remember when Crabtree came out with the safety range, must have been late 1980s, and I fitted them all round the house. I think they were the first with this feature, not sure if there are others now because I never install lampholders. They weren't very reliable, even after a couple of years some started going intermittent and had to be replaced. Presumably they improved them.

I did wonder, and my first instinct was to return it unwired as an ornament, but someone suggested replacing the lampholder, which I hadn't considered and am now holding open as an option.

Although, more comments are coming through that suggest that the original lampholder might be acceptable.

Looks guys, I''m just trying to present a safe appliance to a family member. I used my common sense to look at, and evaluate something I had not much experience with, and thought I could rely on my forum friends to help me out with.
