I just got back from a job interview as a maintenance sparks at an R.A.F air base, 3 people interviewed me so it was quite intimadating at first,
About 45 mins into the interview i was told that i may be asked to do small plumbing jobs like unblock toilets, also painting, change tap washers etc and tiling.
The job details were electrical maintenance engineer needed to carry out installation work, fault finding, testing, ppm and reactive electrical maintenenace.
Im currently unemployed and just doing a few of my own bits so could really do with the work but for 22k a year for a qualified sparky and doing all these other bits and pieces i think takes the p155.
Is this the way things have gone now multi tasking slave labour???

As I've been a maintenance electrician for most of my life, I've learned how to: weld, fabricate, tool make, basic joinery, basic plumbing, pneumatics, hydraulics, how to drive loading shovels, 80ton dumpers. When sh!t hits the fan having a wide skill base can get you out of a mess.

Sounds a bit like a 'lamp changing' sort of job to me. Not as if it's heavy industry or production maintenance........unless it involves maintaining the control tower, that is.

Very true, in fact a part of our apprenticeship at the companies trade school gave us a good basic cross discipline training in Tool Making, Mechanical Fitting, Fabrication, Pneumatics/Hydraulics, etc....
It was also expected that all disciplines help each other on the shop floor too, but not to take on those other disciplines areas of work as a matter of course.

Not quite the same as painting and tiling though is it, and what's the betting that there is no training given in most of these positions. They are just saving a bit of money by not hiring out the work, when they have other trades on the payroll...

I used to work as a Service 'Engineer', and some of the time I'd be sat in the workshop doing bugger all waiting for a job to come in, so I'd help the lads out with ever they were doing.
I now know how to weld bunds etc, probably never use that skill again, but it's better than sitting on your arse doing shag all.
