Discuss Head Scratcher - lighting circuit... in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi Murdoch, yeah I reckon the circuit is fine. I guess the key question is how to wire 3 core plus earth and TE into a light fitting with a connector block on the light fitting for only L,N,E, rather than live, loop etc?

The live from the old light fitting was connected to the solid yellow wire. The lives were connected together in a connector block and the neutrals and earths were connected to the old light fitting. Just seems really odd and can't get my head around it...

Hi Murdoch, I connected it as it was before, and the light was just permanently on. Just isolated it at the consumer unit and scratched my head for a while. I am sure I could eventually work it out, but just after some advice from people who may be able to guide me straight to the problem. It's all a learning curve!

Onions, yes I have 2391 however I don't have any practical experience outside of my own home. I am just looking for advice, thats all. If it's relatively straight forward could you explain where I am going wrong?

With the 'live' yellow wire un-connected at the light fitting, do you have any voltage at either switch plate?

Did you pass the practical part of the 2391?

Not tested that Frank, good point. I think I am getting somewhere with this now that I have some daylight again!!!

Yes, I passed the practical but to be honest it was a quick test one evening at the local college it didnt teach me much, just made us all aware of how little we actually knew. Only did it to understand my own electrics as I really didn't have a clue how to wire a plug before (and yes I know I am not much further on now!! ha ha)

And in the next breath you’ll all be moaning there’s no work about. He’s a DIY’er doing your job and you’re falling over yourselves to help :confused5:

Tony, I was just after a bit of friendly guidance from people with much more expertise and experience. Not trying to do people out of work, just trying to work through my own electrical issues in my own home.

I have worked out the problem now that I have some daylight, coupled with the guidance of some of the members on here. Much appreciated guys.

I agree Tony. No offence Aslan but how are you going to sort out your electrical issues in your home when your struggling to replace a light like for like.

All due respect mate but that doesn't sound like the 2391 that I remember. It's a pretty in depth test and inspect of a 3 phase board which also feeds a single phase one and I've not heard it described as "a quick test one evening" as it's a two hour job. Then there's the theory exam which isn't exactly a stroll in the park either.
Fair play to you if that is what you hold because there's a lot of pretty good sparks that have duffed that one.

Hanging my head in shame... it's the C&G 2392 I took, genuine mistake. I didn't realise my error until you mentioned 3 phase. At the end of the day guys, I was just after some friendly advice. Whats the big deal?

I did consider this but ended up going with this one. I wired it inline with the lives and works great.
