I think the thing with H&S is they'll only get sensible about it when they realise that no amount of legislation can compensate for sheer stupidity.

Reminds me of a saying i heard the other day:-

The trouble with idiot proof systems is that it does not take into account the ingenuity of idiots.

It would be mildly interesting to know what this 'course' for using a vacuum cleaner actually covers - I suspect a bit of manual handling, pre-use checks of the plug, flex and casing, awareness of the flex is being run etc. All the kind of things electricians will have already been trained on in a more general application.
I'd also like to know what qualifications the person who came up with the course holds.

Are you suggesting that this company send all their cleaners and anyone else who needs to use a vacuum cleaner on a C&G 2377 course to learn how to PAT test?
I was thinking more along the lines of a couple of hours training put together by some caretaker or H&S rep.

Tis very true.

My mrs works in a primary school, and the whole school went uncleaned for 4 days because there had been a delivery of new hoovers and none of the cleaners had been trained to use them. I kid you not, they were told they would face disciplinary action should they attempt to use the hoovers without the appripriate training.

You could not make this stuff up!!!!

no....was just in jest....

A few years ago I did a Health and Safety course and was told that everything I use at work should have operating instructions. If not, I had to go on a training course to use it. Bearing this in mind in my local hardware store I asked for a dustpan and brush with operating instructions explaining to the woman serving that this is a requirement for me to be able to use it at work. She told me using a dustpan and brush was intuitive and did not need instructions.

Why do you think that my ugly mug was looking out of the 3rd floor window? Have you seen how high those ladders are? And they were bloody heavy.

I'll wait up here for the cables to come through my side of the wall whilst the 18 year old is at the top of those silly ladders lol. BTW gents everything was safe or Steve would have downed tools, infact he did when the wind picked up. Following week he got a cherry picker, that made it a bit easier.
