Help!!! Can't turn electric off!!!

Hi, I'm currently in the process of changing all my switches and sockets and I'm coming across a few problems, like no earth wire for any of the light fittings. Similarly no earth for some of the upstairs plug sockets but the worst yet is the socket in the hallway (right by the fuse box). It has both new (blue,brown,yellow/green) and old (red,black) wires looped together -not a big issue I hear you say....well it is when the old wiring is live even when the fuse box is switched off!!! How do I go about making it safe???

Says British Gas on it.

It also says Friedland 7?2 on it and has small CSA T+E in one side and low voltage signal cable on the other. I think it's just been a convenient place for BG to stick their sticker.

The box under the meter may be a bell transormer that could (if the labelling is correct) be connected to the MCB that is taped off.

If, with the main red switch in the off position, the cables coming out of the wall are still live, then you should seek the services of a competent local electrician immediately.

Doug, as has already been stated, you need the services of an electrician, with the knowledge and equipment to test, safe isolate and remedy. A neon screwdriver is not that equipment. Please leave well alone, ensure no one can touch what *may* be live and call a sparks first thing Monday morning.

From what you’ve found the above advise to get a skilled Electrician in is required. What else is wrong with other parts that you can’t see ?

For the safety of whoever lives there it obviously needs checking over.

@Doug81 - perhaps you can update the forum with what progress you've made over the past week, given that you've received lots of good advice and a potentially very dangerous situation existed.

Believe or not the brown tail is the neutral by the looks of it. Incredible!

The grey tail is the TN-C-S link between earth and Neutral even though it is also set up as a TN-S. I’ve seen this twice before.
