Hi, I have noticed that the lights in my kitchen have been cutting out recently so have decided to check it out.

When I took one of the lights out I noticed that the box above had been burnt and the wires are damaged,.

Does anybody know what may cause this and how I can fix it?

any help will be appreciated.

It means that the fixtures are producing too much heat for how they are installed and COULD CAUSE A FIRE. Get a qualified electrician to inspect them all straight away.

Hi Clint, welcome to the forum. As the others have said you need a qualified electrician to thoroughly test and investigate the cause, also to check all the other down-lighters and their terminations. They will then be in a position to carry out the required remedial work. If you post your location, I'm sure one of the members in your area will be able to help.

as above posts. heat from lamps has caused this. i always use heat resistant flex for the connection to the fitting and ensure that there is no insulation or flammable material near the fittings. as advised, you need a sparks to come and check and rectify all fittings. cost should not be much more than a call-out and around 1 hour's time. ( with a few quids worth of materials.) .

this is a big problem with down lighters , im in agree ment with all the above comments ,i have come across this on loads of occasions and the one main factor is the quality the fittings where the terminal enclosure just falls off as your has done and probabley when the light has been pushed into place when installed , this is the reason why i now install LED or CFL down lighters ,as the other have said get a spark in to check it out as others may well be effected , if you require new down lighters have a look at the click scolmore ones ,
