Because its not? i just need to know what electricians with a bit more knowledge would go about this as i want to keep the house as tidy and damage free as possible, whats with all the grief?

The grief is that you should not be carrying out electrical works unsupervised in a member of the publics house. You are not fully trained!

Does the home owner know you are not fully trained?

On the asssumption the O.p also has Public Liability insurance, you first need to find out why and how the customer has decided rewiring is needed.

Rewiring the lights to them may not be what you (we) know rewiring to be.

he says he's got 2330 levl 3, and 2 years hands on. what more do you want? we all had to start somewhere, some of us before forums, internet, cordless drills and transistor radios !

I assume you are going to let the home owner know where they (and you) stand with regards to part p of the building regs if it turns out that the work is notifiable rather than a like for like change of lighting. At least then they can make an informed decision.

i assume i will have to rewire the whole circuit back to the CU, maybe leaving the drops in for the switches?! .

Until you look at the existing Wiring lee you won't know this will you fella? and Unfortunately Part pee will be required if rewiring if carried out unless I have had too many beers tonight :laugh3:

I've got to wonder how a new mains supply is required to the light yet a switch drop isn't.
plus if the kitchen light is at present part of a circuit (ie not the first light or last light) then what will become of the existing.

I think you need to find more information about the job you are undertaking. You need to find out if she wants the lights rewiring or new lights wired such as downlights then once you have all the info you will get more advice. At the moment your just guessing what the job might entail and you may turn up to site and do everything totally different.

what if you rip all cables out Tel and then replace with new, maintenance?

same size cable as existing is like for like, same as if you rip out all the sockets and replace with new ones. sasme OCPD as before, same ( or close to ) cable route. but as rm86 said, OP needs more info before deciding on the correct course of action.

well IMO at the end of the day, if the OP Rips out all the cabling except for one bit of T&E from the ceiling to the existing switch but has to completely rewire all other cabling from the kitchen to the distribution board and indeed to all lights then it could be difficult to argue it is maintenance and IMO it will need to be tested and certified and put through building control, but It's just my view and possibly another grey area Tel, and as the OP is an apprentice and not a member of a scam he will need to be careful if he does carry out the works and treat it as maintenance, a judge may not be amused if anything went wrong, JMO.
