Hi all,
i am doing a domestic electrical installer eal level 2 course with olci and came across a question "if i had to wire a immersion heater 10meters away from the cu would i use 11 meters of cable and would i use the same cable size for a 8kw shower

Lee, dont worry mate, you will find that the question you were asked is a basic one, you will look back in years to come and find that it s actually the equivalent of milk +hot water + nescafe = coffee. There is not one person on here who did not have to learn exactly what you are doing now. As you may, they all went onto higher things, people have forgotten they had to learn the basics too. I would say if that question was asked on your course, then its a good course !! keep asking mate, no one will fail you on here, and you will find that comment was not directed at you.

Right mate start with the load. Thats eight kilo watts. What size cable do we need to supply that - page 274 of BS 7671 will tell you. How is the cable run ? in insulation ? through a boiler house- look up the terms "reference methods," you may need to increase cable sizes to allow for the reference methods. Voltage drop- as a cable gets longer, the voltage drops ! simple in it ! find the bit in the books that tell you all about that. Regulations- showers on own circuits please, in bathrooms must be rcd protected, etc- osg will tell you that. Breaker size- wanna be a bit less than the current carrying capacity of the cable, its called failing to safety !
So if anyone says that was a simple question you were asked, yuo can now sit in class tomorrow and be way above all the others and throw some what ifs at your trainers . !! And if anyone wants to know, by the time you have finished your eal course, you will be able to write replies like this, or you will not pass simple. They all seem to think its a breeze, but its not. keep me updated.

Top reply Jason...

I was having a conversation along those lines with a client the other day, whereby a recently installed kitchen radial wired in 2.5 had melted.
The cable was too small for the load/instaltion method and the mcb rated incorrectly.
No paperwork issued by installer
No offer by them to put right the work either..!!

I havent got years of experience, but a few quick sums and a look at the tables soon proved the job was a hit and run..! no thought put into it, bish bash bosh, wheres me money guv..

Find this a bit of a strange one..
Lads are trying to help you and you seem to be questioning everything they're saying as if they don't have a clue.
CBW helped, and to me, you pretty much f&cked him off, then Jason helped and YOU still questioned it

I dont really know what to say here,

Thankyou to Downnout for noticing I was a bit peeved.

Thankyou to Lee for your PMs, I do hope to catch up with you!

I understand that you are new to this and sometimes things can be misconstrued, I am the worst for insulting people after a few ciders. (Perhaps the infamous BAS over on the darkside is worse than me)

Its not worth falling out over though, I believe it is all sorted!

James
