Hi ,

I was asked to do a couple of simple fixes in an old house (light not working, replace another light with a chandelier and similar. It is an old installation (red+black mostly, push-button MCBs etc) I needed to replace a rose and T off another lighting circuit to fix a light in the loft using a junction box (and make ready for a smoke alarm. All the bits I did are working fine but much of the rest of the house lighting is now dead and I'm out of ideas on how to fix it. I checked and re-checked everything I touched and all seems fine. Also looked around for any obvious areas that might have been disturbed. The client is very understanding but obviously, needs a fix. I am fairly new at all this (I only accept smaller jobs) but this is now going over my head. I have advertised here for a more experienced electrician I could work with (I can provide at least some regular work) but no answers yet. Now I need one immediately. Anyone willing to look at this? This is paid work. Please email if you are interested. Central London.

Thanks

Paul

It sounds like you have dissconnected/crosswired the permanent live from the rest of the lighting circuit. have you tried turning all the lights on? You may have inadvertently put the permanent live cable onto a switch live.

Dead testing mate. Do an rR1 R2 and an R2 Rn and check for continuity. What was IR like? We had a job recently where the client just wanted stuff jigging about a but but we ended up pulling a new lighting curcuit and 2 new rings in.....it really was that bad....Chances are it`l be something you have disturbed as it was ok before but it might turn out to be a blessing in disguise as if it hasn`t taken much to disturb it then it cant have been right anyway.....seperate joints and continuity test at each point till you find it. What voltage have you got between line-earth and line neutral?

Thanks to those that offered real advice and knowledge - it is appreciated. I still am looking for someone to take this, and other work on. I don't get it. I offered real (paid) work to this community and there are (so far) no takers. Understand this particular problem is not the ideal job by any stretch but I genuinely expect to generate some real work in the near future that I will have to turn down due to inexperience and/or size. Aren't any of you interested?

bound to be someone in your area, mate. just that no everybody's on line. i, myself ought to be drowning my sorrows after we was robbed by that francophile ref. a member near you has just had a new baby. sure you'll get some practical help in a day or so.
