Help wiring a light fitting

O

Oliver Jones

I have just moved into a new house and need to wire in a new light I bought from B&Q. The fitting on the ceiling upstairs looks like the attached image. Am I right in thinking I just need to insert the wires into this existing fitting on the right and left hand side then wire the earth wire from the fitting in the image to the new light?

does the existing rose fit inside the new fitting? if so couldn't you just keep that but use the switched live, neutral and earth for the new fitting?

Yes you are right in thinking that. You may have to remove the existing pendant to get the bracket on the ceiling. Turn the circuit off at the fuse board, the middle red will be live even with the light switch off.

if you really want to have fun, call a plumber, but make sure your house insurance is up to date. :sailor:

that cable looks very old, it could have snapped as it could have been brittle, did the old light work as it was? if so ignore the center wire. are you able to pull the cable out a bit more or check the cable in the ceiling?

Just ignore it, great idea. Ignorance is bliss
I'm only suggesting that if the fitting worked as is, although given the picture that seems highly unlikely.
It just looks like the feed to to the switch has snapped off, the cable will probably have to be looked at above the ceiling then extended if necessary.

although unlikely, could the fitting have the loop in a junction box, but with a permanent live feed (single core) for a ceiling fan that somebody never got round to actually putting up.

only a theory for the unusual wiring.

Im 50 min away... Ill fit it for you for £25 + 45p / mile =] 51Miles = 22.95 total £47.95 =]

cheap. from the pic posted, i'd not be happy leaving without checking and testing at least that circuit and competing a MWC. £60 + travel. that 51 miles is going to take you the best part of 2 hours, so it's at least a 3 hour call out.
