Help

Just been called out and spent hours (chrimbo night too) trying to figure out a strange domestic fault.

Okay, so there was a power cut earlier in the day, when power was restored by scottish power the customers RCD would not reset.

Okay, so even with all circuits isolated, the RCD would still not reset. Square D RCD and I just happened to have a brand newie on the van. So I throws the newie in and now I can reset the RCD with all circuits off. I can turn on several lighting circuits but in no particular order or no particular circuit the RCD trips randomly as I turn the breakers on.

Incoming supply is good (PME), no mods to the installation at all recently, house is 3 story + basement. 17 circuits all protected by 1 main RCD used as main isolator.

Dont really know where to start, it's all too random. Anyway, going back monday to do a full test, just hope I dont walk away as confused as I have today.

I am thinking that possibly the power cut could have been due to a dropped neutral, and the resulting overvoltage has caused a bit of damage somewhere (deffo knackered the RCD)

definite starting point is to unplug every load on the installation. had one xmas eve, faulty panel heater in conservatory.
