How much cost/hastle for mcs application from members feedback. Gained pv qual. a few months back but mcs doesn`t appear to be geared up for a one man band. Could be a good grand down the swany. Plus qualification lasts 5 years. Cheers..

I agree not aimed at one man band however I'm little more than that and I've gone through it.

MCS requires two systems of renewable to be installed for inspection . NICEIC have now reduced this to one. Unless you can find a very understanding customer to have it installed by a none MCS installer and so can not gain FiTs payments then it would be a case of buying a system and fitting it to your own property. Estimate ÂŁ2K for that.

Paperwork. LOTS of it! You will need EVERY document regarding PV. All the MCS, Part P, guidance on installation of PV, etc etc. ISO documents at ÂŁ130+ each.

You will then need method statements, risk assessments, sub contractor purchase orders, conditions of sale, terms of contract, quality control manual, copy of customer quotation, design plan, end user documentation, warranty info, product information, schematic drawings, supplier list and contact details. And there is more.

I have had to produce a quality control manual for if I have a holiday I can hand a stand in this folder for he or she to run my business while I’m away! RUBBISH!

But still now got it so now all I have to do is keep on top of it over the coming years. Government red tape and lots of it. It’s the same process if its Bristish Gas down to Billy one man band!

I have four larger lever arch files full of documents.

My company investment for training and MCS including two systems installed on our own properties is over ÂŁ12K and that is on the cheep side.

sound's like a crock of .....

my bruv inlaw has been doing chas courses the lot like you said. he said about joining construction line etc. but it's all backhander's, ive known people to send back tender's at pathetically cheap prices as they know it's a get up.

im sure you'll get it back especially if it kicks off, or maybe not if we go nuclear:eek:

were a 2 man band and have just got MCS it is hard work, the whole scheme is set up for larger companies who can employ people to just deal with paperwork and aren't on the tools, but it is dooable, i must admit after our assesment my thoughts were "what a load of S**t" :D

Oh a man after my own heart! I have never agreed with a post more! Exactly the same situation as us.

I got all my G&G certs for solar installer and want to open my own company. As a newbie its a chuffing nightmare. This body, that accreditation, government constantly moving goal posts....Its as if they don't want any small companies eating into Eon etc profits. Is it worthwhile???

2 Choices:
1) Be Your Own Boss:
SELF-EMPLOYED
Pros:

  • The freedom to fit work around your family life
  • Being your own boss
  • Escaping the cost and pressure of commuting
  • The freedom to work on different projects for different companies and the excitement of taking on new projects
Cons:

  • The costs of running your own office: rent, insurance, computer and internet costs
  • Losing earnings if you take holidays
  • No employer security
  • Lack of regular secured income and the hassle of sorting your own finances
  • Never having the chance to switch off from your work life

2) Be a Wage Slave:
EMPLOYED

Pros:

Paid holiday and sick leave
  • A secure salary and chance of promotion and bonuses
  • Access to employer pension scheme and other employee benefits
  • Social interaction with employees
Cons:

  • The daily commute
  • Only having a set amount of holiday to take each year
  • Childcare means you either work shorter hours or pay someone else to mind your children
  • You're a cog in a machine and you have little freedom to make your own choices

Personally I'm unemployable, having run my own businesess for so long ..... :hurray:
