i disagree here, its better for young people to have respect for others in the first place. didnt u respect teachers/police before u got to know them.
sounds like ur son had the right idea to begin with.

Everyone to their own opinions. It all depends on your interpretation of respect. I class it as "someone you look up to or admire".
I may have had the "respect your elders" opinion when I was very young, but I don't remember. Some teachers I respected. They were good teachers and if you messed with them you got hit with a strap or something. They had my respect. Others were just thick and used to belt you when you corrected them. Where is the respect there..... Police.. a hard one. I know a few. Most are great people, really friendly and helpful. Tbelthen there are others that you wouldn't trust as far as you can pee against the wind... Such is society today that the minority spoil if for the majority.... You always hear about dodgy cops but hardly about the good ones that to great things.

Phil d. My comment wasn't mean to have come across as an argument and I'm sorry if it did. It was just my opinion. As stated earlier I class respect as "someone you look up to or admire", we should be polite to everyone, if we respect them or not.

i agree, but until they bring back the cane and teach kids to respect elders and people in authority things will never change

Absolutely correct mate, minor corp punishment never did anyone any harm, I got caned, gymshoed ( sorry trainered( at the secondary school I went too, got a job when I left, never out of work, no criminal record, and before anyone starts I never robbed, broke in anywhere beat anyone up, apart from the odd punch up.

Teachers where strict, some were right barstewards, but you didn't give them any grief. Today, Jesus the way the yoofs talk to you is downright disgraceful.

Pants around their backsides, stupid tatts, even stupider dogs, even more stupider parents who let them get away with it. My old man God rest his soul, never hit me, he didn't have to one. look was enough, now he was a gent. You'll have a hard job stopping me now, a pet subject of mine. I came home from work early once, found some lowlife trying to chisel the putty out of my kitchen window, never batted an eyelid until I got my claw hammer from my tool kit, told the Police what had happened and they warned me off, just a thought what would any of the members do if they caught some muppet trying to break into their house?

Sorry for going on a bit but you are right, kids need respect drummed into them from an early age, over and out.

Pete,I agree entirely about burglars, they need something to fear and maybe if the risk of a good beating was there they'd think twice.Incidentally not many know this about me but I study forensics and criminology in my spare time, anyway it's widely known that most sex offenders, rapists etc start off being cruel to animals and/or have an unhealthy interest in starting fires.Several years ago I came home to find a young lad trying to set fire to my house,I detained him and called the police, just my luck I got the one stroppy sergeant on our division who turned up and started to go on about doing me for kidnap as I had unlawfully detained the youth,I mentioned about the potential risks of this young man and was basically laughed at,a couple of weeks later I heard from a very reliable source that he'd been taken into care, apparently he'd been caught sexually interfering with a very young girl.To think people thought I was mad when I took up studying forensics and criminology.lol

A few years back I took a break for a year and joined a new unit that was formed in our area to protect government buildings,we were run by ex police in tandem with the local force and a big part of the job was what were termed "sierra oscar" units.Basically this entailed deployment into local authority buildings as part of intelligence led policing, we remained there for 12 hours at a time as it was believed these buildings were going to be broken into and valuable equipment stolen,we had to let the break in occur and detain the intruders while on the premises, this worked fine until one night when our cover was blown and we were firebombed. It was a great year although it had it's hairy moments,I was stabbed once, but fortunately had a vest on,had a concrete slab thrown at me from a rooftop and attacked with a scaffold pole, but it was interesting and you got some great training.lol

I could weep when I see the youth of today, heard one lad last night going on about guns and how cool they were, bet he's never looked down the barrel of one! I have on a couple of occasions, from the wrong end and it ain't good. They all walk round with those daft pants with the arse round the knees and think they're smart, they don't want a job a lot of them, and it really winds me up when I see them rushing to the off licence to spend their giro on beer! Now I was a teenager in the early 80's and we weren't angels by any means,I was a biker back then however we'd help anyone out if they were in trouble,I stopped a few times to change peoples tyres and the like. Most of us got jobs as well and it was drummed into us that you had to work!Yes we went out on the lash at weekends, but we worked hard during the week and I can honestly say I never lost a day through a hangover, work hard play hard was a maxim we lived by and I don't remember ever ganging up on anyone, yes there were fights but it was always one on one and when it was over you shook hands and that was the end of it.A few years ago there was a bloke not far from me who was killed when he confronted a gang of drunken yobs who were making his family's life hell, even last night a young lad of about 13 wandered onto my property and when I warned him to leave he informed me that if my dog bit him it would have to be put down, incidentally he seemed surprised when I informed him that actually since he was trespassing if he got bitten then it was his own fault and my dog would not be put down. The whole country is going to hell in a handcart and something needs to be done with these wasters,I believe there should be some form of national service brought back, maybe not military but something that teaches them manners and a decent work ethic. We have lots of problems at the moment,a lack of housing being one of them, why not have a construction industry type of national service where they do 2 years learning a trade such as plumbing, electrics, joinery etc and that way they'd be learning and earning and solving a major problem at the same time.

All sounds very sensible, unfortunately that would all go to pot as well. For a start the employers/companies would take advantage and use the system against itself, to cut the amount of actual paid tradesmen/employees. It's called ''working the system'' and first brought about in the Thatcher day's, where out and out company and personal greed was the rule of the day!! It's
still very much the same today, maybe even worse through the latter implementation of unneeded and unwanted parasitic entities entering workplaces...
