Hi guys and gals, need some advice for my son, he left school at 16 and started an Apprentiship to be an Electrician ( Good lad lol), he has completed many courses with the company he was with ie 2330 level 3 etc but was working towards his AM2 with only 4 months left of training when he got dismissed through a lot of personal reasons going on at home with myself and ex partner, he is 21 in december and has gone the right route to be an electrician ie serving an apprenticeship, this is all different from when i did it, what do you think the best route is for him now as he is finding it hard to get an interview with employers because of being dismissed ?, i know its easy to say because hes my son but he is a good grafter and thoroughly enjoys the job.

hoping you can help

id speak with union/cab,, companies should not be sacking people because they have personal problems at home, quite the opposite.theres probably a lot more to this, but id speak to them first in private, unless you want to spill your life story on a forum..

Thanks alarm man , it was caused by me going through a messy breakup with ex partner and having to move etc, he appealed but the company upheld there decision, they have a reputation for this sort of thing, he worked for a famous seaside permanent fair should we say (lol), and has many skills which normal apprenticeships dont cover ie 3 phase, PLC's etc, he has been in touch with JIB and the college but they are not very helpful, JIB say he need to complete AM2 with a company but thought as it is a practical assessment he could work with somebody and they could assess his work

you probably need legal advice, could be a case of unfair dismissal, if the company is
jib they would be the logical step as they would source an alternative company, but if there not playing you might have to take it further, without knowing the exact cause for dismissal i wouldnt really know, thats your sons business..go the cab route..

If he has only 4 months to go do you know any sparks even one man bands who are willing to bend the truth in saying he's working for them. As long as he is on sight for an inspection when the college assessor comes out, he should be OK. Is what I've suggested unethical Alarm man?

yes it is,and probably illegal, lets just imagine something went wrong with that install he passed off as his own..who takes the rap, which one goes to jail..

Well the plot thickens a bit as he has been working off and on with his ex college tutor who always does electrical contracting which i thought would be a brilliant recommendation out of all the apprentices he could have taken , but he is very unreliable where my son sits home waiting for him and he turns up whenever he wants or not all somedays, i just dont want him to lose heart through what i see as being caused by my personnal situation, he has worked hard and is very good hands on. i was thinking the same electro but as AM says i want him to finish it the right way

You don't have to be working for anybody to do the AM2. You have to pay rather than the training provider. I just booked mine. ÂŁ811 for the pre AM2 and the actual test. Can't get me in till december mind, but that's one route if push comes to shove.

I should have made myself clearer. If the lad can get with a qualified and registered spark (even if it's only on an as and when basis) if that spark is willing to vouch for him even though he may not be working full time......

rally,we probably need the full facts if you want to give them, sounds like your son has been doing guvy work with his college tutor, while nothing wrong with that might explain why the tutor isnt willing to go out of his way to help
