Hi guys and gals, need some advice for my son, he left school at 16 and started an Apprentiship to be an Electrician ( Good lad lol), he has completed many courses with the company he was with ie 2330 level 3 etc but was working towards his AM2 with only 4 months left of training when he got dismissed through a lot of personal reasons going on at home with myself and ex partner, he is 21 in december and has gone the right route to be an electrician ie serving an apprenticeship, this is all different from when i did it, what do you think the best route is for him now as he is finding it hard to get an interview with employers because of being dismissed ?, i know its easy to say because hes my son but he is a good grafter and thoroughly enjoys the job.

hoping you can help

Thanks alarm man , it was caused by me going through a messy breakup with ex partner and having to move etc, he appealed but the company upheld there decision, they have a reputation for this sort of thing, he worked for a famous seaside permanent fair should we say (lol), and has many skills which normal apprenticeships dont cover ie 3 phase, PLC's etc, he has been in touch with JIB and the college but they are not very helpful, JIB say he need to complete AM2 with a company but thought as it is a practical assessment he could work with somebody and they could assess his work

Sorry to but in Rally, but you mention the AM2 and having to complete it with a company, it's not the NVQ3 he has to complete is it? Then he would need to be working, whereas like has been previously stated, if it's the AM2, this can be done at any time (I believe).

im not sure Kev as far as i know its a practical exam, what i can gather from son and the posts on here

basically 2 days in college going over the requirements. The AM2 is different now, out with pyro, and conduit, and in with data point, s-plan heating, and a health and safety an safe isolation online exam. If he feels that he doesn't need it, then you can save yourself ÂŁ250. I went for it because i felt it was too big a risk to fail and incur the resit fees.

I dunno what that race stuff is all about. You want to find out who the representative from the training provider is for the apprenticeship i.e. JTL, and speak to them. There is a slight difference in perception if someone doesn't get into the trade using the apprenticeship route cos this does give you certain credentials versus someone like me doing all the component parts. Find out if he pays for the AM2, will he still receive his apprenticeship papers. There is a name for them but i can't recall offhand.

It might be worth pursuing the employment route if it means he gets it all, cos that way JTL will pay for his AM2. All other things being equal, you can always pay for it.

There are government incentives for employers to take on apprentices.

Why not start your own limited company and take him on?

Thanks for that, interesting, he has been e-mailing his CV off to various firms ,but i think with the advice thats been posted on here , he is going to cold call with a Portfolio etc, he has got 2330 level 3 already and what i can work out AM2 is the practical side of things,JTL was his training provider when he initially started at college and the firm he worked for was one of their recommendations, he has been in touch with them and they basically said he needed an employer to finish the work, reading between the lines i think this was so he could be carrying out work for them to assess but he has done a fair bit of work since with me and his ex tutor, and that is food for thought with me setting up a company as i already work for myself

take him on as your apprentice, and try to get the grant from the government. My accountant set up my limited company for me for ÂŁ50. The paperwork is slightly more involved than a sole trader, but if your accountant is worth his wage, he'll guide you through it all. You'll have to google the government grant, but why don't you start another thread because I remember a few weeks ago a forum member was talking about how he had done it.

There's a lot of experienced people on here. A limited company might be more profitable for you too as the amount you can take from it tax free. The wages you pay your son would be tax deductible too.

that is definitely food for thought as they say, he knows more than me with this new system, apparently he has completed 2330 level 3 and the AM2 gives him the competency side of it, if thats right so you might have started something here lol as i already use a name for me contracting which wouldn't be hard to set up as a company, see how this forum can change peoples lives lol, many thanks for all your help Voltz
