Hi all,

Im due to be renovating a property in the near future which I am in the process of buying.

I am an Electrician but with limited domestic experience.

I have a query regarding the main incoming supply and how to tidy it up.

The incoming supply, main fuse and meter are fixed to a chunky board which looks pretty naff and sticks out a fair bit.

As it's the DNO supply I don't really have many options other than call them out and pay a large amount to move it. The other option I thought of was to box it in with a door for access.

The ideal place would be to move it to underneath the stairs (approx. 5 metres) but I have a limited budget and believe Western Power would want a hefty amount.

Does anyone else have any ideas or opinions?

Would be much appreciated.

Please see photos

Thanks

£10 a metre is cheap mate. You bloody tightwad, get ya wallet oot.

The £10 a metre sounds good, its the £580 figure that bothers me.

Bearing in mind I have to re-plaster the whole house, new kitchen, new bathroom, new carpets, ceilings etc. The list goes on.

You can see from the pictures the state of the house haha

Has that door reveal been altered? I suppose you could get that antique fruit machine of a meter upgraded, and be there to have it shuffled up to the left, which would tidy it up. Or,just pay the 600+ and have it where you fancy...your plastering/kitchen/bathroom dudes will dent the budget more than DNO. Happy new year:icon12:

Not sure on the alterations to the door, I thought it just had a door replacement.

Will def upgrade the meter for a more compact digital one.

Yeah the plastering etc is the majority of my budget hence not wanting to fork out too much on unnecessary work.

Happy New Year

Well it's not going to be an underground joint is it, more like an under floorboard joint. The cable looks to be of the PME concentric PVC insulated and sheathed type, rather than a PILC, which is going to make for far easier jointing. As has been suggested give the buggers a call and get a quotation....

According to Western Powers website, they cannot make cable joints under floorboards or extend a cable within a property. Therefore, I believe they will charge for an underground joint.

I will phone them Monday for a quote to confirm.

Must be a new thing then, i've seen plenty of DNO cable joints both in commercial and domestic within properties in my early years working with an uncle. All were PILC cables in those days though...

Can you move meter to outside wall? Not sure if you said it's a house or upstairs flat. I moved mine from inside to outside, found cable coming into house outside under driveway. Western power only had to move meter and shorten cable and it cost about £150 ish. I fitted box on the wall, they did the rest. If you need to extend cable then another team have to come and do the joint hence the £580 and you will have to pay £150 to move meter as this is another department.

Best ring them, I had issue with the main i comer only an inch below concrete floor and someone came out fairly quick to look at it. Turned out to not be an issue but once you have them there you can then talk through options.
