Excellent im now considered one of them now!!! got my letter of Appointment today from work!! learnt some interesting stuff from the tutors on my course (all ex British Steall and DNO workers) with some scary stories and experiences!!

now for one i did not know is if your near a HV breaker and its Hissing at you your actions are to turn and run!! no disconnection no phone calls to the gaffer..... RUN RUN RUN until your at safe distance to make the call..! as explosion is probably not far off!!

Same way as many electricians, on your own. It's not the correct way but needs must

Before you carry out any HV switching the HV switching schedule has to be read by a second AP and countersigned by them, if not you don't do it as when I did it I was taught the only switching you do on your own is emergency switching to off.

OK but what would you do in the situation I found myself in?

I worked in an iron foundry.
A crane was poring a 70t ladle of iron
Half the intake supply was suddenly lost due to a transformer fault (No.1)
Crane is now spilling molten iron all over the floor
My reaction was first to go to the local sub,
No.1 incoming from primary OPEN to OFF
No.1 bus-section CLOSE to ON
Reset the crane
Finally find out what happened at the primary sub

There was more to it than that involving 2 other subs

We only had 1 electrician per shift, you had to think on your feet most of the time.
For routine switching, yes you would have a pre-prepared schedule (I wrote them).
Planned switching we would prepare a schedule.

Someone mentioned earlier about a video of someone rackingand it going wrong, we were shown this on a training course at work, horrible video!

Sorry Steve,

But first of all it wasn’t me but Ian questioning the No. of HV AP on site.

I don’t think Ian approved of me carrying out switching on my own, but at times restoration of supply is needed to avert a dangerous situation  There’s been times when I’ve had to do some crazy things, shorting out a 660V 4000A ACB was about the tops. It had jammed in the isolated position and I’d only got 3 hours before the process became unstable. I’d even got the works engineering manager passing me tools in to the back of the switch cubical! (He was mechanical so had no part in my decision to short out the ACB). The senior authorised person was at home, in bed, ******

I was confused because I thought at first I was reading posts from 2 different people, then I spotted the same web address in each

not a problem!!! tbh i get my CP to check my switching procedure as he is the one doing the work!! and in his interest to ensure its all turned off!! on shift we only have 1 HV/LV AP

once its proved dead then i jump in and help out as it kills time and gets done quicker..!!

but on other hand all the Procedures have been written months ago and i just print out and double check!!

i have yet to kill any live cabs yet in a hurry on this site!! i killed a 615v/220v transformer in the navy!! the mo'fo started spitting back at me when i spat on it as it smelt VERY HOT...!! the primary windings had melted and the CB never tripped!!

Hi, I've been working for the local DNO for the last 21 years as an HV and EHV electrical fitter, 5 years ago i pulled my thumb out completed my HNC. I'm now considered SAP under supervision, currently heading towards AP (11kV - 132kV) in my own right. It's interesting to read how people outside of DNO's obtain AP status, we sit a weeks switching appreciation course then go out in the field under the supervision of an SAP. So far it's taking me 4 years to get to the stage of being ready for AP status which involves producing HV switching schedules and undertaking EHV switching via notebook. I have around 30-35 EHV jobs under my belt and 20 HV including maintenance, S/S loop ins, cable diversions, overhead main line rebuilds etc. I didn't want to bore you, i just find it interesting how everyone else works around the country.

we have our own generation equiptment x10 1.8Mw generators + 20 Hv/Lv Transofromers and associated Breakers and circuits...!!

we have been asked by NEDL at times to start our equiptment up and export to the grid at peak times..! the company declined however
