Hi, I've been working for the local DNO for the last 21 years as an HV and EHV electrical fitter, 5 years ago i pulled my thumb out completed my HNC. I'm now considered SAP under supervision, currently heading towards AP (11kV - 132kV) in my own right. It's interesting to read how people outside of DNO's obtain AP status, we sit a weeks switching appreciation course then go out in the field under the supervision of an SAP. So far it's taking me 4 years to get to the stage of being ready for AP status which involves producing HV switching schedules and undertaking EHV switching via notebook. I have around 30-35 EHV jobs under my belt and 20 HV including maintenance, S/S loop ins, cable diversions, overhead main line rebuilds etc. I didn't want to bore you, i just find it interesting how everyone else works around the country.
I attended DNO course then went through an interview with our company Senior Engineer and that was me, HVAP. Within a few months i was looked at as the senior HVAP on site! (no pay rise though) But the difference is that i will only operate one type of HV switchgear usually at an outage and the company would not expect me to pitch up on another site at immediate notice for a HV problem (well not yet anyway), where as working for DNO you will come across all types, daily, i assume.
