D

David.

hey fellas,

whats this course all about???

BTEC Advanced Diploma in Electrical Installation its done through ICS??

Im at college 1 day a week doing a BTEC NC in Electrical/Electronics but this ICS course thing sounds better by been an ADVANCED DIPLOMA etc etc
Am i wasting my time at college doing what im doing should i do this ICS one? Are the prospects the same between the 2 courses like been able to do HNC or more. I just feel i'd be able to do the ICS course a lot quicker than 1 day a week.

If the ICS course is as good as it is then why do you not need very good previous qualifications to do it?? "You must also be educated to at least GCSE standard D-G or hold an NVQ at level 1, or a GNVQ Foundation Certificate"

cheers guys :)

Just had a look at that site mate, don't really know, looks like a basic sort of starter course for someone who wants to try all aspects of the electrical industry.Don't know how the BTEC certs stand in the electrical industry,i've always stuck with C&G's.Seems to be what employers are looking for.Sorry i couldn't have been more help.Maybe someone will be able to input something later in the day.

Had a guy approach me today while on site, told me he was an out of work spark and asked me for a job. Got speaking to him and he told me that he had the

BTEC Advanced Electrical Installation Diploma
I'd never heard of it to be honest, he said it's the BTEC equivalent of 2330.

Can only find the course run by ICS (or as? in Scotland), even tried the BTEC site.... Nothing!!

Plus the guy appeared to never heard of the adiabatic equation "yeah think we did that" also didn't have 2382 and I don't think HE thought he needed it. Which is an instant fail in my book.

Anyway I got no jobs going at the moment so it didn't really matter anyway, but I'm still curious about the BTEC

hi chaps...

I HAVE DONE THAT COURSE!!!!! BTEC ADVANCED DIPLOMA LEVEL 3 ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

its a level 3 qual and although it says no previous knowledge needed it would help drastically if you did have at least 17th and some site knowledge it is the 2330 equivilant but by BTEC!!

it took me 17 months to complete.

im using it to allow me to do the HNC electrical Engineering which is a level 5 qual, just need to do the bridging maths course.

i would recommend it to any one but it is hard and you need to have time to put into it..!! failing that i have my Course work and i got two Merits and two Passes!!! :)

Thanks for the reply....

I'm intrigued

To be honest I was actually quite impressed with him, apart from not having 17th edition.

I'd never heard of the qualification before and I'm thinking this might be the guys problem that it's not that well known.

How do you get on Durhamsparky I take it you have this qualification instead of the 2330, have you had problems with the lack of knowledge about the qualification within the industry.
Or are you self employed? If so does the NIC and the like recognise this qualification.

I did take the guys number, but like I said I haven't really got the work at the moment to employ him.

i did it when i found out i might have to leave navy, its well up to speed with what you need to know! i think on my last assignment i had to draw a plan and installation criteria for 3phase supply to a business plus lighting for comunal area and also a single phase supply to a domestic premises!! it took 5 pages, cable carrying capacity, volt drop, earthing blah blah , diversity , motors , transformers, regs..!! i could go on.

to be honest mate i passed my NVQ 3 with that as a technical knowledge certificate... normally have to have 236/2330 or do the knowledge assessmnt bit... City and guilds approved it.!

i found work in the Elec Industry pretty easy, I work Big scale jobs, I involved with 3 phase and HV on a Comercial set up using Industrial Power!!! also look after Diesel Gennys x8 and also 24 HV/LV UPS systems..!! no easy task, my boss looked at it and went oh thats a nice cert you have there! (TBH i think my Ex Naval Background got me the job)

i also work part time and im registered with Elecsa!! i dont charge much but i get plenty of work! rather me do it properly than a cowboy! dont take any thing on that i need to commit too though just yet so re-Wires and new Builds are a NO NO..

Yeah this course is hard, and you dont get the practical with it! but it is a way cheaper option than any other distance learning course out there. Under 500 quid if im right. The cheapest C&G equivalent i found was just under 2000 pound. And then college was way more expensive, that was gonna cost me over 6k just for c&g 2330 lvl 2 because i would be classed as an international student and would have to pay international fees.

The draw back of it being cheap is exactly as durham sparky says, it is hard and you do have to be disciplined.

The course is aimed at electrical installation and 3 of the units i know are units for the BTEC National certificate in Electrical and Electronic engineering, which is the qualification for High Voltage craftsman

So academicaly its a good qualification and it is cheaper than the traditional course.

The BTEC Adv Diploma in Electrical Installation lvl 3 satisfies the technical certificate otherwise known as the underpinning knowledge for an NVQ and can be used to becoming an approved electrician.

So that means that you can use this qualification as an equivalent to the c&g 2330 one of the requirements that you will need to be an approved sparky.

You have 18 months to get the course completed and the course is structured in four units

Health and safety unit
Electrical Installation 1
Electrical Installation 2
Electrical Principles

The units are really comprehensive and you have to get your head around it. Although you do have a tutor u can contact online, and they are usually good at keeping in touch.

This is definately a course for those people with other commitments that keep them from going to college and who want a cheaper distance learning alternative. although it is comprehensive and you will have to be dedicated to get the assesments done.

But all this i know through research, and I am still going through it, so if anyone does take it up and they need help, then they can get in touch with me and ill be glad to help.

maddfridge,regards bridging maths,
im a couple of months from finishing HNC electrcical/electronic and didnt do bridging maths, still passed maths but found it hard and you really need it for 'electrical & electronic principles' module.
anyway, if you can get a hold of 'Basic Engineering Mathematics' by John Bird and get your head round that youll be more than ready, its a great book and i wish i had read it beforehand rather than rely on it to remind me the basics. it also has chapters on my arch nemisis...calculus.
