Check this put, this wasn't the problem. But found it whilst looking and felt I had to take a photo!

100+ year old house, lady says there is a banging coming from the electrics, I said ok I'll take a look, she said it's above the bathroom ceiling, like a firework going off, a large cracking noise and a flash that you see from the loft hatch.

The house looked over 100 years old inside, looked like the original decor etc, I didn't go up to look at what it was I. The loft as the entry to the loft was via the hatch above the stairs and it would have been sodding dangerous getting I to it, I said it's too risky.

anyway, here's a pic

How do you know you isolated the correct circuit if you couldn't get to the fault?

Could you not have explained that you would maybe need a scaffold or other access equipment and the costs involved rather than passing it on?

Sorry but sometimes its just not worth it, it was coming from the lights, there was only a light circuit, a plug circuit and a cooker, nothing else, she said its not done it since.

Id rather walk away from it, I have called her again just now to ask her if she has sorted it, she said no, but its not done it, but would ring me and tell me if it does it again and I said ill come round with someone else.

Uk where is the job mate I am sure there's one of us near it to come and help you.
I am not going to slate you but I do think this needs dealing with sooner rather than later.
You need to convince her that it requires immediate investigation.

Im not too far away in Nottingham, I also have a large A frame ladder that may reach it if he wishes?

I couldn't sleep at night not knowing what was happening up in that loft.

How did you find the offending cct and what was it? And did you recommend someone to her that would be man enough to go up and take a look BEFORE the house burns down?

This thread is going in my top 10 of Numptiness...Man can't put a ladder up in a house stairwell, then climb it!

Ever thought one is in the wrong trade and should have stuck with the office job? :)

How high was the ceiling mate? It's a poor do when you've got to leave an old woman with no lights because you think getting up to a loft hatch is too risky, is it not risky leaving her in the dark?

Get a mate to steady the ladder/steps and go back round and sort her lights out
