Can anybody help.
I have been to various call outs for faulty immersion heaters. Now I know how to test stat, element etc. and how to sort the problem, but what I could do with somebody explaining is why some heaters have a built in reset button and some don't, why some stats have a built in reset button and some don't.

The other day I went to one where the stat had gone (sunvic). I replaced the stat like for like however the stat nor element had a reset buton. Aswell as the immersion heater the water is heated by a rayburn so I was wondering what happens if the rayburn heats the water above the thermal cutout of the stat. (Am I right in thinking these stats are non resetable or do they reset themselves when the water cools down).
The stat has a dial to turn it upto 70 degrees. However I thought now the cutouts were designed to operate if the water went above 55 degrees. Any advice would be appreciated.

i think your going a bit far really

everyone has there own views and ways of doing things, i personally would consider that condition dangerous, and was probably installed in such a way long ago and the fault in the setup was only realised after people had got hurt

for the sake of the cost of a stat and 5 mins to fit im sure none of my customers would sue me for it when i explained the possible dangers

Your missing the point here I could be a MOT mechanic who believes that no one should drive about in a car with no seat belts but I cannot force the owner to fit them or else I will fail his car on the MOT . So think about it an EICR is an MOT on an electrical installation.

Yes I hear what you say but legally all you can do is advise or recommend you cannot fail the installation because of it and yes no doubt the customer will say yep change it but another will say hold on it been in for years and caused no problems and also can you show me where it says I am legally obliged to do it . A bit like the landlord I highlighted he was angry that he was misled into changing his CU so he threatened legal action and got all of his money back
