Hi there, this is my first post, so hello :)

I need some help as i am not getting anywere.

I have my wing mirrors that are power fold, there are x2 wires, 1x blue and 1x white, if i put 12v+ to the blue and earth on white, they fold up, 12v+ to white and earth to blue they fold up.

What i am after is some form of relay system that will switch between polarity's as i dont want to install a manual switch, is there such a unit or item that can help me with this.

Maby some thing where if i supply power to one side of the unit it will be normal, then power to the other it will switch over?

Ryan.

Pity you can't beg or borrow a Haynes manual, you'd have a wiring diagram to follow and be able to order the controller or other parts.
Can't help feeling that folding the mirrors in when the ign. is turned off is a bad idea, having arrived, parked and turned the engine off, the next thing most people do is check the mirror before opening the door :D

That is a very good point Brady mate, as this is the case i will have to find the i-bus for the alarm system, so maby when i press the button on the alarm, it will send 12v to one of the wires which will then fold the mirrors, when i press the button to unfold, and the 12v is turned off the mirrors will unfold again.

So just to double check guys with the relay i have orderd does this sound right.

If i found a 12v wire to the i-bus of the alarm module, so 12v becomes live once the alarm is set, this will send the 12v to the relay, whcih will change over the polarity and fold the mirrors, then when alarm is turnt off the 12v signal is removed the relay will switch back to normal and let them unfold again.

Does this sound right.

Ryan.

If you do it that way the blue/white wires on the relay will need reversing. The relay will also be energised all the time the alarm is set. You will also have to take a permanent + to your overide switch to allow you to close mirrors whilst driving.

Steve would it hurt for the relay to be energised while the car is parked or is this not a good idear mate?

If it was energised while the car is parked for a few days would this kill the battrey?

Could it still be done so when the is 12v the mirros fold up, and when the 12v is turned off they unfold?

Only if there is a 12v supply for alarm system which turns off when alarm is on and on when the alarm is unset. If there is then it can all be done as was originally described.

Maybe another way by using an impulse relay but I will have to think about it a while.

The only other way is, when the key is removed from the ign, you still have all power to switches and lights and windows etc, even if every one gets out of the car apart from driver, as soon as the drivers door is opend ready for driver to get out of car the power will switch off, would this be a better idear, so you turn off ign, you are looking in mirror to make sure its safe to undo the door, as soon as you open the door the mirrors will close, does this sound like this would be the better way or not to you guys?

Sorry if this is getting a bit confusing :)

Whats a impulse relay steve?

So how would i go about this guys if i wanted the switch only to work with ign off, as it could be pressed while your driving other wise, any way that could be done?

Ryan.

Sort of defeats the previous question when you were getting chased by the rozzers and had to drive down narrow alleys with the Ign. on.:D You can't do that with the Ign. off.
If you don't want it running automatic then just connect the relay coil + direct from the battery through a fuse and an on/off switch, then the mirrors will work if the Ign. is on or off.

Best way to stop accidently hitting switches while your driving is to keep your hands on the wheel or gearstick.:D

:D I see your point lol :D

Its a relay that changes state when a pulse voltage is applied..so its not energised permanently..this could also be complicated..will think about this issue a while...i do like a challenge.;)

I shall let your brain tick away then steve mate :D

The relay i ordered should be here friday/monday i think :)

Still trying to think of the best way to wire it up etc.

I have recvied the relay today guys :)

Any more on the info Steve?

Ryan.

Wired the relay up today and theres are prob but it only ever happens every now and then?

If i connect it all up and there is power they will fold up, touch the remote wire to 12v and they will unfold, you can do this for a while then when you put 12v though the remote wire the relay will clikc but the mirrors will do nothing? remove remote wire and do again and it might start working again, but the relay is clicking , and if the mirrors go direct to battrey they work 100% all of the time?

Its all most like the relay needs to power off before the change over maby

What could be going on here?

Hi Steve, how are you doing mate?

The relay was wired up the same way as your post you made, it all works but some times when you go to unfold the relay and wing mirror will click but the mirror will not do any thing?

Yet if i run the mirror direct to a 12v feed and do them by hand they work spot on.

I have been doing some more looking around the net, and have come across the ' ip sam 1.0 ' and it is a module from germany to retro fit folding mirrors to bmw.

I will wait till this turns up ( could be a week ) and will have a play with that, i will let you know how it goes Steve.

Again thanks for your help in the other post's.

Ryan. :D
