Would quite like to get into the industrial side of electrickery our at least look into it and was wondering what it involves.. I know I don't want to do house bashing don't mind rewires, new builds and commercial. Just looking into different routes...

On an unrelated note. I have a car! close to two weeks now so if you see a black colt around Bradford or Keighley area probably best to avoid it;)

I know house bashing is sh**e, I have no idea what industrial involves though. It'll be better to get into it sooner rather than later getting a wide scope of experience because at the moment I'm working on domestic both house bashing and full rewires with little bits of commercial

Best getting in with a company who do industrial installs.. they are a far fling from house bashing and simple things in domestic become a major design task in Industrial.

-Lighting can need control banks with contactor arrangements.
-Inrush currents are something that needs to be thought about in design.
-Rarely used reg's in domestic come into play like the omiting the need for overcurrent protection on supply cables to large fixed loads so saving can be made in material costs but comes with the need to ensure you Zs is still going to be compliant.
-Installation practices use many other methods like strut, jack chain, steel systems etc which are really called for in domestic so in terms of similarity to what you learn at college which centres around domestic and light commercial with a brushing comment on industrial its a whole different ball game.

Just a few things ....I could go on but I think there's enough to chew on :)

All I knew about industrial Is it involves wacking big cables.
Who's an example of an industrial client? Steel mills etc using 11KV equipment?

there's a lot of metal munching: tray, basket, trunking, ladder. you either love it or hate it. one thing is that once you've installed your containment with the cables in it, you can look at it and say " i done that". not like domestic where 90% of your work is buried under floors.

Have a peek at some of my photos in the install thread Doody, I'm purely an industrial sparky, spent maybe two days in houses since I started my apprenticeship. A few points of difference off the top of my head. Instead of Consumer Units, you'll find 3 phase Distribution boards with vertical chassis, or control panels with banks of DIN rail and ducting. Much of industrial work involves layers of controls, from pushbuttons and toggle switches to PLCs, relay logic and computer interfaces. Different voltages. Motors at 415V, 12/24V control and instrumentation circuits, 0-10V analogue systems. Different cables, very little TPS except in office sections of factories. Lots of orange circ, SWA, multicore flex.

I absolutely love metal work. I did resistant materials gcse and A level. Was also flying through the metal work sections in workshop. Especially when your work can be seen

I've seen a few 3-phase boards haven't installed one. Did some work yesterday for a plant hire place with diggers and stuff

Mike what are you doing Thursday night 11pm - 7am?

I'm pulling in some 35mm 4 core swa into a small supermarket. You can terminate the DB end and I'll do the 3ph fused Iso end. Not industrial but these are the typical cable sizes and glanding that is standard.

Remember the shop rewire, changing it from single phase to 3ph? Same kind of thing but with bigger cable and bigger boxes to put them in. If your up for it tag along.

Can't say i've anything planned, i'd love to. Haven't seen or spoke to you in a while sorry about that
I'll give you a call we can sort it out. Thanks paul

All sorted, see you tomorrow night. Take some photos for your NVQ3 but not of the meter, the seals fell off the other day when I had to sort this out

One of the reasons why it is getting upgraded from 16mm to 35mm, explain and show you tomorrow Mike. Also found this before putting my hands in that fused Iso unit. Remember to use your eyes first before your fingers lol. This was just before we shut the mini/small super market down for almost two hours, it was still live at the time. Only so we could see why a phase had dropped out, no live work were carried out (safety point for the forum)

Good reply but I think (Mike #2) is saying that in jest  (he is like you MDJ but 19 years old!)

Anyway Mike #2 is not coming along anymore. He realised that he had work Friday morning lol. (Mike #2 you are a rounded door handle but other opportunities will pop up  )

How about a government office building changing the lighting grid on the office shut down on the weekends? Saturday and Sunday, full days for the next 3-4 weeks? Experience only on this one mate, full cards need to be handed in for payment. Join us for a few hours and get the feel for these kind of jobs. You have not been in these kind of working environments yet bud. This is full on professional site, I have faith in you or else you would not be invited. Please just tell me you dont have a criminal record? These guys check everything about everyone, they know your inside leg measurement even if you dont!

This Sunday or next weekend, up to you? The offer is there bud and I can sweet talk the head foreman and the government overseer to get you on site but only if you want it? Mike #2, this place is strict to say the least.
