Inline switch on laptop charger?

I've picked up a 6 amp inline switch today, the type that is used on lamps. MLA 1250 - 6 Amp Inline Double Pole Lamp Switch - Pack of 20: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

Can I use this switch on a laptop charger plugged into an awkward socket to switch it off when the laptop is not being used? It says "For use with Luminaires" in the slip of paper that came in the packet, so I was wondering if there was some regulation or safety issue with doing this.

no this will not be suitable or safe, the running load of your laptop charger is about 9Amps continuous and the surge on switch on is usually 10-11Amps, the switch you have bought is for light fittings only with a Maximum load of 6Amps, the quality of the seals on this switch will be poor, the contacts inside will be too thin for the current from the laptop charger, also the switch will very likely not fit the size of flex from your laptop charger....

the switch will not be correct or safe, and will be a shock and fire risk...

can you plug in to another socket? or move something out of the way...

9A sounds a lot, when the input rating is 1.5 amps, and the plug fuse is 3A. are you sure? :O

switch will be 230V AC. not suitable fo elv DC..

I'm talking about the mains AC side of the transformer...

Anyway, I've done it now and it's working fine

Sounded like a fair question to me. Can't see a problem using that switch either, as long as the laptop charger is double insulated. Daz
