Hello everybody,

Can anybody tell me if I need another RCD to protect a single outdoor socket in my garden?
I already have a 30mA RCD main switch at the C.U so would this be sufficient?
Also, would it be ok to spur straight from a socket on the ring circuit-using 2.5mm SWA to the socket, about 5 metres away or should I run it from a fused spur?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

No need to use another 30mA rcd your original 1 is enough.

Yes you can spur of the ring directly if you are only installing 1 socket.

Thinking about it, to make life easier, could I spu rfrom the ring to an outdoor adaptor box on the other side of the wall using T&E, then run the SWA from there, avoiding an problems getting the SWA through the wall?

Why SWA for a five meter run to a socket ? - I assume ts going underground ? however, may be running along a house wall to where the socket is needed, in that case Tuff cote will be good enough.

Im using SWA only because Ive got some and I dont want to spend any money if I can help it, being out of work and skint n all that! Thanks for the tip though Jason and yes, it will be underground along the garden fence, might as well do it the right way and catch a bit of sun while im at it eh!

All good points fellas, but Ive already got an outdoor socket in the loft somewhere so I could fit it ( with supervision and testing from an NICEIC registered mate) - and have 10 pints of lager - paid for mostly by said mate - leaving the rest of my dole money to waste on less important things!!

How come theres an outdoor socket in the loft. Is the roof leaking that bad?

yeah I live in a dodgy council house, no roof tlies, dodgy plumbing everywhere, so damp even the rats wear speedos - everything in the house has to be IP rated, its dryer in the garden thats why im putting power out there!!
