Hawk

Hi guys. I have an interview coming up for a position of Generator Engineer-Electrical. I was wondering if any of you had any tips. Cheers.

If asked to explain the operation of the AVC what will your answer be?

Just be sure you know something about generators, otherwise don’t show up.

Not so sure i'd know how to answer that question myself? But then maybe the grey matter is shutting down for the day, it's been a growler of a day here!! Do you mean AVR by any chance??

Fully agree with your second sentence, if you don't know anything about generators it'll be a pointless exercise showing up for the interview!! lol!!

Make sure you find out exactly what the job entails, then there's no hassle later, for example do they want you to do call out or is it just 9 to 5? Always try to be direct with both your questions and answers,I remember going for an interview once for a job as an installation electrician, anyway half way through the interview the guy starts asking questions about designing circuits,so I looked him firmly in the eye and replied "yes mate I'm perfectly capable of doing that side of the job, however not for the money you're offering".At the end of the interview he shook my hand and said they'd let me know later in the week,by now if I was honest I didn't really want the job,you kind of know when something just isn't right.Anyway the following day the guy rang me and offered me the job,I was there about 6 months and hated every minute of it,from puppy walking useless apprentices,to straightening out other peoples cock up's I got the lot.

Cheers lads. It's an informal interview with the business manager and a technician. If they think I'm up to the job then I will have a second interview at a later date with the director.
I have some experience of maintaining generators on ships and studied them at college but as I'm not working with them everyday I have limited knowledge.

Don't BS them, if they ask about something that you know you're weak put your hands up to it them but stress, and give examples of how you've done it in the past, that you're a quick learner.
Good luck mate, let us know how you get on.

Good advice from Trev there. An old boss of mine once gave me a good tip, which was to know your bad points/weaknesses. Everyone is genned up on their plus points, but often interviewers will ask about weaknesses and that's when most people get a bit stuck because they haven't prepared for it. Daz

You have to be able to turn those weaknesses to positives in your answers.
It is no good saying I am a poor timekeeper and cannot control my paperwork.
I am better at working at my own pace to ensure that I can get the best out of any system.
I do feel that I am able to manage a job with the minimum of bureaucracy.
may be better ways of putting things, without lying.
Or I feel I am dedicated to the accuracy of a job and so may occasionally take more time to ensure a good job.
I am single minded about the repair work and will generally focus on that to complete the task at hand, which can leave some administrative details for catch up.

Yep, but still good to be able to state your weak areas - it give a more honest impression of you. The interviewers know no-one is perfect. Daz

Cheers for all the advise guys. It paid off! Got the job :)
Trev, one of the people interviewing me was of the female species and very appealing to the eye. Hard to keep the eyes off! Hahaha.

Good job I gave you that bit of advice then isn't it mate. You'd otherwise have been looking at her cludgies the whole time and you wouldn't have gotten the job.
Try explaining that one to Mrs Hawk. No need, disaster averted by the Geordie :)

I find it weird that someone would check out your social media? Unless it is a work related on like LinkedIn. My FB is just used for memes...
